A FAQ on Multiplaying

hi,
just discovered this site and i'm enthused on the possibility of multiplaying AC.
After a while the AI-factions do start boring you.
So please tell me : how does it all work?
when I play with a bunch of people we all have to wait for everyone to finish their turn and email our moves to someone who then in turn mails back what the rest has done or something like this?
And how often/how long do you play ?
Just tell me about it.
