Yeah, it was pretty nasty, and only a few blocks from here, but not that close - we never heard the shots, but shortly after, there were police helicopters all over.
Some action here, too - in the building next to us, the police are out 24 hours a day, protecting somebody - tonight, they were going to move or do something with whoever it is, and one uniformed guy was standing out with an M-16, another guy on the radio all the time, one down a little way, and a couple of state judicial police, or maybe Feds, waiting. That's just the part we saw out our front door, and these guys looked scared as hell.

Probably there won't be a storm (of lead) next door. There's a police sniper in one building above them with a laser sighted rifle, and at least three other cops inside, plus reinforcements whenever they take whoever it is to and from wherever they take him (which is only done when no one's looking) They're being extremely careful. I'm pretty impressed by the professionalism, actually.
These guys have figured that the way to stay alive is do your security detail well enough that nobody tries to play with them. There's also a Tijuana Police "Fuerzas Especiales" division station 5 minutes away - about 3 minutes with the way they drive. Those guys have serious manpower and firepower - fully auto combat rifles, SMGs, and semiauto shotguns, gas and stun grenades, etc. and they come in force - nobody ****s with them. I saw one sergeant there with a custom made 120 round stagger clip for his M-16. They have a budget to buy pretty much whatever weapons they want.

Mostly they're armed with Kalashnikovs. The wirestock paratrooper model is quite popular. All 7.62 mm, the newer small-caliber stuff isn't popular.
