Have we started? Where's it at? Don't the Gaians normally start a game?

You can make any turn order you like in SMACX, so the Hive starts. That said, I have sent AllieCove the turn twice and there is still no reponse...

Whoah! Sorry, everybody!
I only just checked my email box, and it looks like I'm the pace car here...
Hang in there - I will get my first turn over with in a very short while and then we'll be in business!
Sorry for the delay. I normally check my email much more regularly than this.
[Runs off and hides, knowing this is an appalling start to her first PBEM game.]

Right, it's off. I sent a copy to Googlie (as he's next in gameplay order) and one to Tau Ceti, more or less on a gut impulse.
I assume that normal practice is just to zip it and send it to the next man along... am I right in thinking this?

That is correct, though you made a very common mistake by not ending your own turn first. As I got the turn too, I went in, ended the turn and sent the corrected version on to Googlie. There will be a reload message, though.
I also sent an email to Allie explaining the problem.

Good to see we're off - looking forward to the game!
Well ... as much as anyone can look forward to raging hordes of demon boils, I suppose

...and after that, I find a bug in my scenario file. Sorry guys, a restart is needed. I have sent the new first turn to Allie, and apologize for the delay this causes.

No problem. It will have to wait about eight hours, though, as my university computer service has somehow unforgivably neglected to include SMAX on the server

Hi, just posting to let you guys know that I'll be away for the weekend, so I don't expect to be able to play any turns until Sunday/Monday. Apologies for the delay this will cause.

There could be a slight delay at my end. I had no trouble playing my turn, but I had a huge amount of trouble zipping and unzipping the file. My PC hates zip utilities for some reason. I've asked Tau Ceti to check if I have done it right.

Yes, still waiting for Tau to have a look.
Once I get a turn or two under my belt things should start to run more smoothly at my end.
Allie, do you require a zipped file or will a unzipped .sav be acceptable?

Apologies for the delay, everyone. RedFred's game came in along with some others I am in, I decided to leave it until after those, and forgot it until I saw this thread yesterday. It turns out RedFred had sent me the wrong save, though. Just as I was about to send a reply to him, there was a power failure (it happened while I was calling up my ISP! ), and as it was pretty late in the night at that time, I left it until this morning. We should be moving again soon, though...

RedFred:
Try enzip (a freeware zip program that's really easy to use)
You can get it from Tucows or CNET.com

Enzip ran amok, zipping up files that I never asked it to. I uninstalled it in a hurry. I've tried the most popular zip programs and am now working my way through some of the more obscure ones. I'll try again tomorrow...

Well, it's still early in the game and so the save file should be pretty small, so I can accept a small one.
But that's putting off the inevitable - I gather that later in the game they get pretty unwieldy as more info has to be saved each turn?
I've used PKZip and WinZip extensively, and have found that WinZip is the better of the two. A freeware version is available at http://www.winzip.com .

Well, if the zip problems continue, I might be able to help out. I can cope easily with large files - have a cable modem so it's no problem. Suggest we start by trying unzipped and then if it gets to be a problem RedFred can send the unzipped file to me and I'll zip it and send to Allie ...
In the meantime RedFred, can you try just sending the file to Allie unzipped? Otherwise we'll never get round to playing this game

Sigh. My profuse apologies to all.
I have been working off and on for close to two weeks now on my PC. It continues to hate zip utilities. I know it is the machine and not me because I have used zip programs many, many times at work without any problem.
I have never heard of anyone with my particular problem, which has plagued my PC since I got it. I actually thought I had it fixed or I would never commit to a PBEM. Simply not using a zip utility may not be the most efficient route as I have a modem hook-up to the internet.
Misotu, Googlie & Allie, should I send along a unzipped file to Allie and continue to work on my problem, or seeing as how the game is just getting underway, pull the plug or see if Tau Ceti can take my place?

I have twisted my housemate's arm in this matter, and he is willing to let RedFred (and RedFred only) post the unzipped large file to the house email address.
It is: enixine@enixine.dabsol.co.uk
Please, please, PLEASE! only RedFred send to this address, as Willcox will get really annoyed with me if I don't clear inbox things with him. There's a slim chance that I might be able to talk him round to it, but it will take almost Pravin-Lal-like diplomacy and enlistment of helpful friends, etc.
But if it will get the MP game moving faster, then I'm happy to part with my minidisc player and xylophone music minidiscs every night...

RF:
The other thing we can do (once the unzipped upload begins to take more than 15 minutes...) is to do it the old fashioned way and you put it on a disc and meet for a strategy talk (it is a team game after all), pass it on and I can zip it and send it to Allie.
Likewise I can act as a drop box for Mis's turns to you (altho downloading large files is quicker than uploading them)
It's about time for another strawberry milk shake anyway

And Allie, you need to change the e-mail addy in your Apolyton profile - it still gives the enixine@enixine.dabsol.co.uk as the current addy.
For RP1 I used amazonian_mage@yahoo.com (the last one I had received from you) as the appropriate one. Is this OK? (loved your narrative post, by the way)

Oh - does Apolyton accept commercial email sites now? When I tried registering with my Yahoo email address, they told me that was disallowed.
Anyhow, I'll prod my profile and see what I can change.
