Small maps
I can't used to playing on small maps in MP, I can't get a good enough defense when playing against good people, any suggestions?

Since I need a few more posts to receive Emporer status, try playing 2x prod and build on mountains, hills, and forested rivers

Best defense is to know when the enemy is coming and intercept his units.
Solution: research horse riding 1st and send a few horses out as quickly as possible to explore.
You will then know where is the enenmy coming from, where to spend ressources on defence, and best of all make your enemy defend so that he cannot attack.

arii, I just hate researching horses cuz it delays getting into a decent government. But having horses can practically win the game before it ever really starts. Find your opponent quick and pressure them and limit their ability to build cities.

Horseback (or some other tech), ceremonial burial, alpha, code of laws, monarchy. Huts can throw things off, of course: the key is that the third tech discovered can't be CB or CoL; you have to work around that.
Edited for too many semicolons and stupid advice about going for CB first.

DaveV, i meant when you get horse from a hut first. I have never been able to take the staight path after that. Usually have to take two more off the path. People do claim that you only have to take one more off the path, but since it doesn't happen that often to me, I've never gotten it right.

having never done it, not sure, but i though people said that if you researched horse instead of bronze as the one off the path, it didn't slow you down. I do know that when i get horse from a hut, it really really screws up the tech path to monarchy. (if anyone has a path that only makes you pick one additional, please post it)

RAH, I was afraid I'd misunderstood you - the question seemed too easy . For maximum protection against huts, I think the order should be: burial, (hut tech or your preference - bronze will not be available), alpha, CoL, monarchy. It should be possible to select ceremonial burial as a first tech, but I have to admit I haven't tried it.

I'll test it. I usually choose alpha first.
Thanks,

I guess when you are not clever enough to add something positive to a thread you would try and put down those who are.

Rah If you are already have a city and researching something and then get horse from a hutt then the tech path is screwed up. You should be ok if you get a tech from hutt then go cerbur, alphab, col, monar once you settle your 1st city.

Why would I have to be clever to add to a thread in a positive manner? The funny thing is that you guys hail yourselves as great and that you are all very knowledgeable about this game. I've watched for years as you've all slowly learned the secrets of the game. It's like watching a caveman develop into an intelligent being. All of what you guys are figuring out now I've known for years. In fact there are things you've already discovered that I know in a more advanced form. It's just kind of amusing that's all.

Gee, from the style of your posts, I assumed you were 14.
I guess I have to bow down to you since you've discovered EVERYTHING about this game before anyone else did.
Go troll someone else.
