Er, well um. You see, this is America. And although I live just a few hundred miles from the Canadian border and just 100 miles from where moose (mooses? meese?) roam through the wastelands, SNOW strikes terror into the staunch American heart it appears. Of course, the treacherous fluffy white substance appears every year, and every year it is greeted with horror, alarm and a confusion about how to handle it
Articulated lorries were banned from 5am today state-wide, in case they get stuck and block the roads. All work places closed today, schools didn't open at all. We had ... um ... 4 inches of snow. We're expecting a further 12-18 inches overnight, apparently, which will be fun. If that happens, the state is empowered to declare an emergency, should it choose to do so, and *forbid* people to travel on the roads until further notice ... Bread, milk, salt, grit and generators are completely sold out round here. Fresh food is somewhat scarce too.
I called the local cable TV company to book an installation in my new place and was told to go away unless I have an "emergency". Now I can understand an "emergency" if your power is out, say. But what do you think constitutes a "cable TV emergency"? Any and all enlightenment gratefully received.
It would be funny if it weren't so damned inconvenient right now.
Mis the Desperate (being hounded by the pregnant-buyer-from-Hell's attorney. Apparently I am contractually bound to hand-carry the entire contents of a 4-bedroom house 25 miles to my new abode, if necessary. Or they sue )

Latest update - everything is closing, my husband has been told not to come into work until Wednesday earliest and the guy in the liquor store says we're heading for a State Emergency.
Which, for the uninitiated (like I was) means a 24-hour curfew on the general public until it's lifted again.
Gulp.
But ... undaunted, the valiant Mis struggles on at the computer and forwards 2106 to Big_C ...

Sorry to hear about your problems Mis.
On the bright side of things though, being stuck at home because the State forbids you to get out probably means you'll get an overdose of SMAC
Good luck

Thanks for the good wishes gang I'm back now, anyway. In the end it was about 12 inches of snow in total, so we managed to get all the furniture out of the house, just the small stuff and storage to go now.
My boxes and I are installed in the new temporary place. Small, but with a very nice deck overlooking a river gorge and facing the sunset ... am looking forward to sipping chilled wine out there in a couple of months
Am now on the internet (just! but it's a lash-up so I could lose my connection for a while again while it's properly installed. Won't be more than a day though). Dial-up instead of cable modem of course.
So hopefully my problems are over, provided I can get the rest of the house cleared in a couple of days. Needless to say, I won't be checking in as often as usual until the boxes are unpacked and I have found a number of vital items cunningly concealed by my husband.

Mission Control, we have a problem. I am at Libraian, I think. (24 ecs to switch SE). Are we all at 24, or is one at 40? How about NU1?

2113 to Googlie.
I am at 40 in both. And I definitely have Transcend drone settings in NU1. Aaarrrrggh!
The question becomes, is this unavoidable? We have had it twice with Basil and now once with Aredhran; both were aware of the problem and I find it hard to believe that they would consistently forget to check the box...
Maybe that particular fix only works for me, if that? Are any of you in any of my later scenario-based games? Googlie, Chiron Winter works properly, doesn't it?
(Afterthought: This may be because NU2 was restarted. Are you also at 24 in NU1?)

I'm at 24 in this and 40 in NU1
Chiron Winter appears to be OK (I honestly can't remember, but it didn't register as odd - LOL, maybe I can't change SE settings yet in that game)

I'm at 24 in this game ... it rang a warning bell last turn but I'm in such a rush at the moment I forgot to post about it, sorry
I wonder if Red forgot to implement the fix in the restart? It would be easy to make that mistake. I know we've restarted a few times now - but I would vote for checking back with Red to see if it's possible that he might have slipped up? At this stage, it's no big deal if he wouldn't mind just restarting with the fix - we wouldn't need a new map or anything ...
In the meantime, 2113 has gone off to Big_C.

Restart would be fine with me. Looks like Tau is the only one at transcend in this one.

As I suspected, in Chiron Winter I still can't make an SE change, so don't know if that one is OK

Hey guys... I just happened to stop by and read about the problem.
It's weird, I'm almost positive I *did* check the "force diff. level" toggle
I am *MAJOR* busy these days, work is hectic like it's never been before (almost 10 pm, and I'm still at work ), so I don't know when I can find the time to take a look at the game.
Please bear with me

No sweat, 'Red. We'll wait with NU2b until you have the time and meanwhile soldier on with NU1.
- and better being busy than unemployed, eh? (unless one is semi-retired, of course)
It hit 91 degrees today (that's 33 celsius for our Eurocolleagues)

Just seconding Googlie's comment ... Red, no problem at all. NU1 is definitely fine and NU2 can wait until you have some time to get to it. Thanks for helping us out

Guys,
I'm truly sorry for taking such a long time to fix that game...
It's really weird, because the "force current difficulty level" flag *was*, as I thought, set ! To fix it, in the scenario editor I turned off the flag, then switched to every faction, set the difficulty level to Transcend and reset the flag.
I ran a simple test with a hotseat game including Drones and UoP, until I discovered PlaNets. When I tried to switch to Planned, the cost was 40, so I guess this time it's OK.
The time has come at last for you to enjoy that game
