Is it possible to play Civ through a proxy?
I`m new to the multiplayer Civ2 world, and I have a small problem:
A friend and I are attempting to play Civ over the net, but when I try to connect to him we get problems, because his connection is a bit slow. It may not help, but I figured that it might help if he connected to me to play. The problem is that I connect to the net via a proxy server, and when he puts in the IP address of the proxy, I can`t connect to him because I`m not playing civ on the server computer. Hope that made sense.
My question is: is it possible to play Civ over a proxy server, and if so, how?

You can as a client but not as the host unless you set up the ports correctly as per a firewall, quote:
The tcp port Civ2 Gold uses is 4993 (both inbound and outbound so
that the server can be on either side of the firewall)
Never done it though, I just turn MSICSharing off.
I've just installed ZoneAlarm, I think this helps. Sorry don't fully understand it myself

Zone alarm's very easy to use, but it is in fact quite vulnerable to hackers. There is a specific port that is not monitored that will remain unmentioned here. Any one can march stright through that port without zonealarm being the wiser.
As for proxy servers.....every ISP uses a proxy server, some need proxy settings at the users end. Those that don't require the proxy settings use a "transparent proxy." Having proxy settings shouldn't affect your connection to a civ2 host computer...but it may not work if you are hosting the game.
To tell the truth tho I have never played civ2 online with proxy settings in effect. I used to have an account with an ISP using a proxy but they sucked so I left em.

HELP! Civ2MGE/WinXP/ZoneAlarm/Optimum Online cablemodem
Help!
I have had many enjoyable hours of Civ2MGE on my old machine (with patch 1.3, of course). But now that I am running a new machine with Windows XP, and ZoneAlarm, and a super-fast Optimum Online cablemodem, I can neither host a game nor connect to another game. Yes, I tried disconnecting ZoneAlarm, but it still doesn't work.
For whatever it's worth, all my ports show up as "stealth" on some of those check-it-for-you webpages. That is, even when I have disconnected ZoneAlarm.
What can I do? Please don't tell me a clean install without ZoneAlarm, I do need that program. Plus, who knows, maybe this isn't even ZoneAlarm.
Thanks for your help,
Matt
