Does capturing a city give an enemy tech?
I'm a very experienced Civ, Civ2 and SMAC player, never got CTP1 because of the bad press. I'm playing my second game of CTP2, from what I read in these forums about the AI I thought I could handle the hardest level. So now it's 600 AD and I'm WAY behind on the powergraph. Since I'm playing on a gigantic map, I've only encountered 1 other civ (Americans), and have begun my war of conquest. I think they're ahead of me in tech, because he had a catapult (alone outside a city, too bad he didn't garrison it, cause it coulda done a lot more damage to my army ), unless he found the catapult in a ruin. I haven't got catapults yet, and I've captured 3 of his cities so far without getting a tech advance.
Of course the "manual" doesn't cover this, and I don't see a setting in the game options to toggle "techs on conquest" a la SMAC. So I assume you get a tech with conquest, and the Americans ain't ahead of me, right? Please tell me I'm right, or I'm gonna start seeing Machine Gunners plowing down my Pikemen when one of the other 7 AI's find me!

Yes you can get technologies from capturing enemy cities. I'm not sure if it happens every time though. I have gotten techs from cities i capture. But that usually catches me up to the Computer AI. I've never been more than 2 behind any 1 opponent so I'm not sure.

I believe you have a 50% chance of getting a tech advance when you capture a city. But I'm not sure of the exact number.

In Const.txt,
CAPTURE_CITY_ADVANCE_CHANCE 0.5 # chance of gaining an advance when capturing a city (assuming they have advances you don't)

OK, thanks guys. Hmm, 3 cities captured, no techs yet. Seems like the odds have been against me thus far in this particular game. Maybe I'll have better luck trying to shock that damn monkey at the top of my screen

It's probably disabled, I've never gotten any either, and I haven't seen evidence of the computer taking any of my techs.

Maybe they didn't have any techs that you hadn't researched.

I conquered 6 cities, and didn't get any tech.
They sureley have tech that I don't so I suppose this option is disabled.

I've conquered 42 cities and I've never gotten any tech.
Impossible level difficulty. And about 12 of those city conquests were when I was still behind in tech. This was when I spent a good many turns trying to get them to trade techs with me and they refused.
By time I got to Nationalism and Spies, I was already ahead in tech so I stopped bothering with diplomacy (because it didn't seem to be working anyway:P)
Honestly, I thought they disabled it for CtP2. After my first 6 captured cities or so, I stopped wondering whether I'd get any.
If it isn't disabled well, on Impossible it doesn't seem to work.

Well, I changed the value in const.txt to 1.0, captured a few more cities, still no techs. And yes, I'm certain they have more techs than I, cause I've encountered 6 of his catapults, which I don't have yet. And I sure need them, my poor knights, samurai and pikemen are taking HEAVY losses.
Then I bumped the value to 100 to see what happens, captured another city and STILL no captured techs. I'm playing Impossible difficulty level. I guess I'll have to concentrate on getting spies so I can catch up!

Carrion,
When you captured techs, what difficulty levels were you playing? Maybe it's just disabled on Impossible.

I thought there was an optional rule when you started the game to pick if you wanted tech on caputed cities or not.

No, I just checked the options in the game start menu, it doesn't have anything like that.
I know SMAC had that option, and didn't Civ2 It's been a LONG time since I've played Civ2, and I can't imagine myself disabling techs on conquest anyway.

Hmmm, did the first CTP let you capture tech? I never played it, so I wonder if they designed the game this way or if it's a bug! Either way it bums me out!

In CtP1, you could find new techs upon taking a city.

i'm positive the AIs were ahead in tech cause i had embassies with them, however i've never discovered anything from conquering 200+ cities in the games i've played.
