Why is it all you SSC guys are always talking about silk? What makes that so speacial? Wine gives more trade and more shields. Gold gives alot more trade and a great fortress spot. What is all the fuss about a forest with some caterpillers in it!?

Because you can't "mine" a grassland square and have hills with wine appear. If you could, we would (yes you can terraform such a square but that's later in the game).

Don't terraform unless you're ready to lose the silk or buffalo. I once killed all the buffalo when I changed the plains to grassland (4 shields to 0 or 1 shield is bad in the late stages of OCC--go from 80+ to 79 or less)

Well, if you find a good square upon which to found your one city, like one with silk/whale/river/and an adjacent body of water, who is going to make a distinction between silk and gold or silk and spice?
I will say this, my one city always seems to supply hides! Probably not the best commodity, though I welcome some debate on the issue. Being a trade novice, I suspect that nearby buffalo resources squares and the availability of hides go hand in hand. So does silk bring in alot of extra trade or is it extra dough upon delivery of goods?
Aurelius the I'm no trade maven.

the beauty of hides is that it appears to be the one trade commodity that repeats itself meaning you can always send it out as a caravan....
Now this doesnt' always happen so don't expect it but it is the only commodity which one can establish a route from only to see that it is available the next turn as well....
this can allow for repeated trade which means a hoopla of science and money for the coffers....IMO
