I think the "science" victory description sounds a bit glib. The only scientific part is researching the original technology (woop-de-doo). Building a wonder and city improvements is strictly economic. Gaining the territory to build and defend the obelisks is a diplomatic and military effort. No attention is paid to the size of map or number of opponents affecting difficulty either. It's a bit like calling WWII a scientific victory because Oppenheimer had something to do with it.
