New official OCC record: 1803
I just finished an OCC game where I landed in 1803. I used the give-away-all-your-science tactic. Unfortunately I had some bad cases of changes in the beakers required for next tech. This cost me a couple of years and it even happened on the last turn so I had to delay launch because I didn't have Fusion Power. I hope to break the 1800 barrier soon.

Paul!!
Please stop setting these new OCC records will you?
No seriously, great result once again, not that I'm the least bit surprised. Congrats!
You wouldn't happen to have kept a log, would you? And did you save the game early enough for this to become another comparison game?

Heck, I've beaten the 1903 mark quite a number of times. Nothing to it. Easy.
Oh wait, you said 1803, not 1903!
Excellent job as always, Paul!

Unfortunately, no early save and no logs. When I started the game I didn't think I'd do that well. The city had no rivers and a bit too many non-trade squares. I later irrigated two forests to plains, but I never thought about the record until I compared the game to my 1821 log. The main difference is probably that I settled around 3500 BC compared to 2350 BC in the 1821 game. The specials in this game were whale, fish, gold and spice.

You've got that right, valmont. I can't believe how much I've learned in the week I've been perusing this site. Now I'm afraid I'll be spending more time reading posts than playing. Nah. Won't happen. U KC 2, huh?

Hey, SS, how could you forget Arthur "Bryant's" BBQ? And do you know where it got it's reputation? In Playboy magazine a few years back, there was an article on restaurants. It began... "Not all of the great restaurants in the world are in Kansas City... only the top five." And the toppest was AB's.

kcbob - my bad. thx! (never read the articles!)
Back to Paul's tremendous result. I am surprised that you didn't have rivers. I have been thinking that I will need all rivers to even get close to 1850! Did you start trade caravans earlier? Or have a really big trading partner city?

That depends on whether you think the millennium starts in 2000 or 2001. I'll try to prevent such discussions and land this year, but I can't promise anything.

I tried OCC this afternoon. Just played till 1AD to make myself comfortable with it. I played a total of about 10 games. In one of them I was pretty good. It was a large land mass, and I did not build my city till 900BC. By that time I had two allies (I could pass through their territory without any difficulty), 650 golds (300 tribute before offering peace), 12 free units (horse, archer, legion), 15 techs including mapmaking, pottery, monarchy, bridge building, trade. (I don't remember quite clearly the exact numbers, but that's about the situation). Maybe this one can beat Paul's record.

I think thatīs too late for a new record. At 900BC you should already have finished colossus and some improvements. At 1AD I use to have copernicus already. At around 500AD you city should be developed that much, that you discover each second turn. Try getting automobiles before 1000AD.
If you found your city too late you simply will run out of turns
IMHO
Paul, Iīm not sure anymore, but didnīt you mention somewhere you once reached AC in the 1770īs?

Yes he did a 1771 on a OCC "scenario" I made when I found a dream spot with 2 gold and 2 whales but it was his 5th or 6th stab at it so it wasn't an "official" record.Dam good though. One day he'll load a game with the right techs and a great spot close by and will land in.......I don't wanna think about it.

As Smash already said, that was on a map that I had already played before. Knowing the map gives you a big advantage and therefore you can only set a record on a randomly created map that you have never played before. As far as Smash's map goes, I played that several more times and one time I got very lucky with huts and landed in 1565, but as I said before, that does not count as a record.

Great job Paul, simply amazing. I can't break 1900. Do you have any tips for people like me who find diety easy but can't do OCC that fast. My science rate is always relatively high getting discoveries quickly. I've had Fusion at about 1850 my only major problem is building my spaceship and tribute. I can have the 80 production necessary to build the 15 structurals and enough caravans to build the components but my problem comes with the modules. I never have enough money becaues the tribute never comes and I have to wait enough turns before they are completed this slows me down. I can't build my ship fast enough!! If I try to get tribute they declare war and I'm slowed even MORE. HELP ME!!! I read yr guide great job. Thx

1565?well that means a pre 1700 might be possible with the right set of circumstances.Thats kinda scary.
methinks you have "held back" on a trick or two in your excellent strat guide. Or have you developed something new?

Think about this: if you get republic, construction and trade from a hut, then you can go directly from despotism to republic, and build HG so you go up to pop 12. Then you get sanitation and grow to 21. This can be accomplished quite early if you are lucky, since the techs needed can be found in huts.
