video card requirement
I asked this on a reply to another message, but let me ask again.

I notice the 4meg video card requirement on the game box last night. What is in the game that needs this. CTP only need a 1meg video card. Some recent RTS games, like Age of Kings, only need a 2meg video card.

Is anyone running the game on a video card under that spec?

Fingers crossed.

I have a 2MB Diamond Stealth that I'm hoping will get me by for now. Might be a bit of a stretch, but it's worth a try. I only have a P2 233, but I'm hoping 192MB Ram is going to pull me through.

Wishful thinking? Probably.

MidKnight Lament:

I am very interested in how it goes for your system. It sounds like we have the exact card. I am running at 200Mhz and 80megs of RAM. Let me know. I told my wife I don't mind passing on CTP2, but when Civ3 and MOO3 come out we will have to upgrade...

Sorry I missed your message here. I'll get back to you when I manage to get my hands on the game in a couple of weeks. You'll do the same?

Wow.... who are you people with these 2 meg video cards and 200 mhz etc? I have a p3 750 and 256 megs of ram with a Geforce 2 64 meg and I already wanna upgrade. If you like computers at all theres no reason to have such a slow computer ( less then p2 300) .....you can get a better one for like $500 or $600.... get with the times.

Lack of cash. It's got nothing to do with what I like. No more need be said.

Excuse me actually no I cant get a computer with 500-600 dollars actually. They usually have crappy celeron and share video ram with regular ram which is way worse then have a 2 meg vid card. Also computers that cheap come with less then the amount of ram my computer came from and not all of us are rich. I cant spend 1200bucks every other year on a new computer.

I got married a few years ago and we just had twins this month. I have other financial priorities...I'll probably upgrade late next year or the following year. I still enjoy all my old games and I don't have the time I used to have.

Firstly as has been pointed out...real life has a way of intruding...Secondly If programmers ever REALLY pushed the envelope of available tech....they would be with the times
Lastly...before you lamely attempt to flame me too..I have a 1ghz atholon t-bird, Voodoo 5500 based system. But I regard it as a luxury I was lucky enough to be able to afford and would "can it" in a heartbeat if the financial necessity arose

Well, all seems to be going fine. I've only played for about half an hour, so I haven't been too taxing on the system yet, but I'm picking if there was going to be a problem with the video card, it probably would have happened by now. For the record, I've got p2 233 with 192MB ram.

Hope all goes well for you too.

I think the 800 MB harddrive may be a problem DarkKnight. The game needs 150 mb for the swap file and another 320 MB for the game files. That means you need to have about 500 MB of free resources to play. You can install a barebones windows and the game, but not a lot more on that 800 MB.

Wowzers! I did not realize there were still so many older configurations out there. I have 2 computers one PII350 and the other PIII600. But then again computers are my life. It is my job ya know so I always try to stay on top of the hardware race. But I haven't been able to do that lately heh.

There is nothing wrong with older computers. I still use my old Pentium233 w/ 64MB RAM. Sometimes I even dig out my old 486 laptop. I'll admit, though, that CTP2 runs much better on my PIII 500 w/ 192MB RAM and Matrox G400 video card.

Savant 800 meg free 4 gig harddrive.
I also have a laptop:
pIII600
256meg RAM
7gig FREE
32meg Video card.

I just installed Simcity3000 on it and Simcity can load in under five minutes. It was like click on .exe 2 seconds SIMCITY 3000 screen comes up, 2 seconds main menu 4 seconds to load up new game.1 second to go from underground to overground(that really bugged me waiting around 5 - 10 seconds on the PC.) and 2 seconds to save
and instant exit.Oh Bliss.

Ya should leave people alone about their systems man...ever so much more because you don't got the best gear out there. Do you have any idea how much good computers outside America cost?

Hey, I might be the smallest here. 233Mhz with 48RAM. Im figuring that the latter is the reason I don't get video effects. Can anyone confirm this before I buy.

BTW, there is nothing wrong with owning an older machine. Sometimes you speed demons run out and buy before you have a need - sounds rather market driven to me. Me, my machine runs Red Baron 2, CTP2, Civ2, and Word. What does burning a grand do to improve this?

There's definitely nothing wrong with older machines. My main PC is a PIII 666 with 128MG ram, 40GB hard drive and the works. Being a programmer working with visual studio ya need it! Cost me a packet though.

My server is a 486 dx2-66 with 32mg ram and 2 gb drive running NT4 server. No problems. Oh, and CTP2 runs on this PC, though it takes about 10 minutes for the Artificial Stupids to have their turns.

And lo and behold, I still play some REALLY old games on my fully functioning commodore 64!

I don't want to sound like $600 isn't a lot cause at my rate its a lot of hours at the button factory. But I go the upgrade route in increments, I took my P200mx system, bought a new mother board, PIII 667, 128mgs 133 ram, case, and used everything else from the old system. Its easy and everything works. Total cost $600 + shipping. When I get some more scratch I'll upgrade the monitor, the Video card to a AGP and the CD drive. Hey my floppy is from my original 486. I did this about 3 years ago with the 486 to the P200. If you buy your proccesor at about 1/2 the speed of the most current, up to date model, you can get one fairly cheap and still have a machine that will run most games super! At least for this old TBS player.
