Geography
Sten mentioned about the benefit of playing on a small map and that reminded me of something been meaning to ask.
It seems like when starting with a customized world (regardless if it's archipelago, contintents or the other), the world still looks like the bayous of Louisiana. I've hesitated on playing on a small map because I find all those squiggly shorelines with its numerous peninsulas to be unrealistic and annoying. When one talks about finding all your opponents on the same continent, I chuckle because that is using the term very loosely. Why can't it generate a map that looks like the small world map or the British Isles? To me, that would make me want to play on a small map.

I agree. I try using 3 million years old with large continents. But I still end up with maze like continents. I would like something earthlike. 3 or 4 large continents separated by oceans. Sometimes the maze is so bad it would take me 20 years just to send a transport somewhere.

I agree that the map gernerator is pretty much as useless as the ai war machine....
Try as i might all i get is amoeba looking islands/continents which is truly tiresome...
Yet if i play the world map i go bonkers because it is too easy....
Does anyone have any great maps which are world oriented as far as land mass goes...
I once played a map where i started in the middle and four other huge continents were adjacent to me.... made the game very interesting and difficult as the ai tended to converge on my territory...

I always play on one of the world maps. I just can't handle all that jungle and swamp.

As for the jungles...
Set 5 mil. years and you should get it diverse enough (you shouldnt get large portions of say swamp or anything else). And some jungles are pretty good if you know what I meen

Try playing some of the download maps created by humans. Better yet, don't look at the descriptions first.
I like to play on minimum(25x40) maps. You will find the terrain challenging(mountainous). The ai can only fit 4 competitors as a rule.

I'll use the med. world map, sometimes the Greece or Roman ones too,
You should radomize the resource squares for a bit of a change.
