Defense against slavers and (maybe) spies
I'm not sure if this works with spies later in the game but I noticed that in the early part of the game you can get an early warning of when a slaver is near your city. When the Ai is taking its turn to move units you might notice that the screen will centre on one of your cities but there will be no units visible. That's because there's a stealth unit there. When I noticed this the first time I rush built a slaver in that city and lo and behold I discovered an enemy slaver lurking a couple squares away from my city. I quickly booted him out of the area. See if this works for you.

The only problem with this is, unless you have a stealth unit, you can't see the slaver unless you try to move into its' square

That's why I rush build a stealth unit in that city when I notice the auto-centre glitch.
