Pagan Colonists?
OK, so I'm not really supposed to be playing China or Japan...
But how can I generate some colonists and get my hands on all those lovely neutral provinces in Indo-China, just ripe for the taking?

Hmm, it may require a random event. I do know that it is possible for Nippon at least to get colonist. They set up a trade post on the coast of Asia in my current game.
Also, hold your mouse over the Colonist indicator at the top to see if it tells you what you need in order to get them.
Outside of that, best place to go is the official boards, in the FAQ forum.

I'm not sure they get any colonists... random event is the only way, I figure..

Make them speak Protestant
A shipyard would do it. Wonder if the files could be changed to cause that?

I don't think you can edit your nation's colonial dynamism at all, but once you build a shipyard you will get 1 colonist a year. To get shipyards you must build your navy technology up to ~14, so it will probably be around 1575 or 1600 before you start getting any.

Are you sure, Nick? the save files have a boolean varaible called "colonialnation" for each country, and a numerical "Dynamism" variable for each. I don't know if changes made would be permanent, but it might be worth a try.

I've tried messing around with the dynamism and colonist values in the scenario file, but unfortunatly haven't been able to get any extra colonists for poor little venice . The wording of the "colonist" tag leads me to believe that it actually affects the number of colonists you start with in reserve just like the "diplomat" option, but I haven't been able to get even that to work. I suspect that, like several other things you should be able to change but can't, the number of colonists you get from colonial dynamism is somewhere in the .exe file... either that or I'm just a gimp who can't h4x0r the text files right.

IIRC, China is hard-coded to be unable to construct buildings, so a shipyard is out of the question.

Yeah, but the dynamism, and colonialnation values are in your saved game file, not in the scenario. Scroll way down, to where the nations are defined, and there you will see a bunch of stuff, and in there there is that whole section.

The variables seemingly related to colonization, (dynamism, colonist, and colonialnation) are present in both the save files and in the .inc files (scenario files). I've played with both of them, and neither seems to effect rate of colonists.

Hmm... I don't think China can be hard coded to be unable to build, that would make it hell to play in Fantasia, unless there is something else going on there.

Perhaps they just took another country that was allowed to build and changed it's name to "china" in the fantasia.inc file. That technique has been used several times by the improved grand campaign project over at the EU message boards.

Download the improved grand campaign for an asian nation. In it, the East Asians have a bigger map at the start, and Vietnam and Thailand(Ayutthaya) are in the game- you could try to build up a nice little east asian empire.. You would probably have to get to "You stole their map!" event and steal a Euro's map.......
