O.K. I promise to bow out no matter what post might come next...

I totally agree with your thoughts on immersion. Of course, the "Best of Both Worlds" is still worth shooting for, but push comes to shove and it's the quality of the intellectual challenge that makes a game (well, some 'point and shoot' games are fun for the visceral feel) enduring. Excellent post.

Imran,

I wasn't going to reply, but I only have a nice thing to say: That was pretty funny in an Imran-esque sort of way, so I give you some credit. Happy gaming, and I look forward to kicking your a$$ in EU multiplayer (it has that, right?) as soon as I'm up to speed. It would have to be PBEM, though (does it have that?), which mean it could take YEARS to finish.

But, what the hell, we are Net geeks anyway.

*yawn*

I can see a little Chinese kid, with glasses as thick as the bottom of coke bottles, sitting at a computer in the corner of his room (in the dark), wiping his brow, waiting. Muttering over and over to himself, "I have to get this kid. I have to humiliate him. And I don't care if I have to make things up, I'll do it". All the while neglecting any life he may (probably may not) have had.

Of course his bathroom is two feet away and so is his microwave food, but heaven forbid if he runs out and has to run to the store to get more, and leave his only friend, the black box.

I call him Yin.

So now you are saying immersion factor doesn't matter in strat games? So the only problem that I said, with merit, is 'memory hog'. Funny, you never responded to me saying SMAC was a big 'memory hog' (bigger than EU, OH YEAH!). So does that mean all of those people we screaming like 'little girls' (I wonder what you call it when you find a so-called bug), and then got sad with the game? Give me a break.. give you a clue!

The pacing of EU hardly makes it a blindingly fast real-time effort. They could easily make a PBEM variant from the sounds of things. Too bad, then.

But how? I mean the game goes simulatanously for both players.. unless you do a month and then the other guy does a month and then the computer calculates them together... and even then it'd be impossible!

Imran,

I said "variant." This means different programming...a kind of different game in a sense. I understand they made a decision not to invest the resources, and perhaps the AI is good enough anyway, but who has the time to play a game like this real-time against a human player? Is there even a good way to save and resume a saved game? From the reviews I've read, MP looks to be the only real weakness. Too bad, as I said. It would have been a whole lot of fun to play a PBEM variant of EU...

I like the game. I've played it for hours upon hours and enjoy myself immensely. It is far superior to any game that I have played.

It's that simple. I like it. So there.

How can a real time game have PBEM?

Answer: No, it does not.
