Unofficial Poll: How important is multi player?
In light of the fact that Both Civ 1 and Civ 2 were initially designed and released as single player games, how important is multi player to you in Civ 3?

What I should have said for options 2 and 3 (but I can't edit them):
  • Release earlier as single player, add multi player as a patch later.
  • Release later as both single and multi player.
This might make the poll a little more sensible.
It was simply in light of the understanding from what I've read that Firaxis have mainly been developing for single player; very little (if any) work has been done on multi player. So it was a question of whether it is worth the delay to have multi player implemented as well.

They'd better have PBEM! That's the most important IMO!

To me, or to the sales of Civ 3?

To me, not important at all since I hardly play MP. OTOH, MP is vital to the sales of the game.

MP is CRITICAL for any new game; the exception would be "edutainment" titles aimed a young children. When you look at the top selling PC games all have strong MP functions. Playing "solitar" is fun only for a little while. Play against real people brings an entirely new aspect to any game. Civ III needs not only Windows MP, but cross-platform MP with Linux and OS X as well!

Multiplayer Rules!
Single player is okay for mild short term amusement but multiplayer is the future and really the only way to play these games!

I would go so far as to say if you have never multiplayed, you have never civved!

I had to vote for the both option. MP is essential but so is single player.

Poll maker, you should have had as an option "Won't buy it without either."

Well, I play both MP and SP games of SMAC at the moment, although the latter tends to have faded in quantity over time relative to the other. But both are a must. Even if you just intend to play MP, SP is a necessity to sharpen your teeth and get used to the game.

Personally, I enjoy a good few games of SP myself of any game, even now...

"Multi player only, forget all this AI stuff"

Please, only bother with options that make any logical & commercial sense.
After all; Civ-3 isnt exactly "Unreal" is it?

Also, the first option is ridicules - everybody expects multiplayer these days.

I would have to say that I play multiplay in about 95% of the time. So Multiplay is very important to me, but then again, I like playing single player too (5%)

Well it is imperitive to have both. I want to have choice in what I play. Sometimes I like single player or multiplayer. But often, to me, multiplayer is not feasible because I have to coordinate a suitable time to be online and often I don't have that kind of time free in one lump. So as well as these two basic functions, PBEM is an absolute necessity...

I thought the option Release as both single and multi player covered that.

i like multi play the best, so i definately want that. but my prob with it is that its so time consuming. So when i am short of time, single player is a must. so if it doesn't have both i will be severaly dissapointed.

Poll changes
I've clarified the second and third options of the poll by editing the first post of this thread, the changes of which are highlighted in red .
So, does that make a difference to the way you vote?

Multiplayer is the least important thing for me. I say spend more time developing the workings of the game, then release multiplayer later on.

MP is very very important, and like phoenixcager said "They'd better have PBEM!"

Seriously, I don't think the tech exist for an AI that could provide more entertainment than another human being, AI's use scripts, and after a while, you can easily predict them.

but with humans... oh.. devious li'l bastich....

MP is definitely important. and "They'd better have PBEM!"

For a long time I only played SP. Then I decided to play an online game, it was fun but it seemed as if it was to difficult to coordinate. I then played a Hot Seat game, it was more fun at the beginning than the internet game but became very boring because of the long turns. Finally I played a LAN game. Which in my opinion is the best way to play. You still have to wait for your turn to come around but you can do things while you're waiting. I actually spend more time doing stuff when it's not my turn rather than when it is my turn. LAN is the way to go for playing Civ, if you have the resources to do so. If not than SP is the best. So Civ III better have SP and Multiplayer with LAN because those are my two favorite ways to play.

I'm a long-ime Civ (and SMAC) player who never MPed, but I think I'm going to start with CivIII, since I won't have to buy an add-on to do so, and more importantly because of the increased importance of commodities. Also (and I'm not sure if it was the same in MP as in SP) the diplomacy options didn't make interactions between civs very interesting, or important in CivII, which will be very different given the possible complexity of treaties in CivIII. Needless to say I voted for both.

Firaxis has announced a few months back that there will be these multiplayer options:

- Lan
- Internet
- PBEM
- Hotseat

Personally my favourite options are hotseat and internet, and if Firaxis actually reconsiders these options i might think twice about buying the game.

Mp is critical for a lot of games now. FPS and RTS games are pretty boring solo, though they are useful for practice. But realistically, I'm probably still going to play a game like Civ3 solo. It's just not the kind of game you can pop in and out of.

I rarely play multi-player. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be availiable in some form at a later time. I realise many other people play multi-player almost exclusively. And once one has mastered the AI, you can then move onto the Human challenge.

I will not buy the game unless there is a mp option. I don't care how rich the diplomatic system is or how challenging the AI will be; it comes down to within a couple months I will figure out how to beat the game at all levels and by all types of endgames.

I do like the option for a game designed as mp from scratch. But until there is a computer with net access in a good percentage of homes it will not be.

Won't there be a modem to modem option? Why doesn't that get put into most games anymore? Some of us get free local calls so why should I have to pay my ISP to play MP against my friend?

With some tweaking I'm sure you may get that look as a LAN to the game , at least if you are using Windows.

In light of recent news that multi-player may not be included in the first release of Civ3, I thought it might be time to bump this poll up to the top again.
