Let us play MP3's in Civ3!!
I was thinking, could we have the capbility to play MP3's in Civ3?
I know that we have MP3 players out there but it would be nice to have one integrated into the gameitslef, so it wouldn't interfere with the game and would be eaiser to use than a standalone program.
What do you guys think?

good idea. more and more games are getting into mp3s. firaxis could include their civ music in mp3 format, and still let people play their own music.

MP3's slow or stop the game for several seconds when finding a new file to play. This could get annoying. MP3's have good and bad sides.

As for the delay in playing the game. Civ is TBS, so I don't not think that a few second lag would be that much of a detraction, compared with the advantages, not having to have CD in the drive to play music while in the game, etc.

sometimes cd's have trouble playing too, but that's rare. you could reduce the lag time on finding mp3s if they were all in the same directory. this might make it so the difference between cd and mp3 is smaller. (maybe not, I'm not an expert)
the big bonus is that you can pack way more minutes of music into mp3 than cd audio.
And for a game like civ, even an hour's worth of unique music wouldn't be enough to stave off annoyance. I have a high tolerance for repetition though, so perhaps I could be convinced by a really good set of cd soundtracks that were subtle and backgroundish. civ 2's tracks were ok but certain tracks got on my nerves after a few hours. so, all hail the mighty mp3!

Or you just are losing a war badly and "Break Stuff" comes on.
Seriously, it could also allow for Scenario desginers to add more atmoposhere to thier works by letting them add background music in the form of seperate MP3's.

I'm not against it just pointing out some disadv.'s . I like CTP2's music where each one goes on for about 8 minutes so you dont notice it repeating even if it's playing the same file over and over. Well not if it's the good ONE. I only really like one song in it

Most games know are putting their music files in mp3s and all it takes is putting your mp3s in the correct folder to play them in game. I would find it hard to believe that Firaxis wouldn't use the mp3 file format. It saves space and has excellent quality. I look forward to listening to all my music while playing Civ III.

Or, we could just skip the music and have the ability to play custom mp3's or cd's. I know I'd prefer the Gladiator soundtrack while conquoring nations much more than some stupid repetitive theme in the background.
