With 8 sides I could go all directions in a striaght line....
Not all directions... Just the 8 on the keypad...

The longer i think about the map the stronger i'm getting convinced that the game doesn't need tiles at ALL.

It was mentioned before to make the map a Point system instead of a box system. I support that idea.
Abandoning tiles altogether would fundamentally change the nature of the game... it wouldn't really be civ anymore... And that wouldn't just apply to unit movement. Worker allocation, terrain generation, terrain improvement, combat and various other things would have to be significantly changed...

For Reference, HERE is an (very low quality) illustration of my triangles cut up into isometric tiles idea.

There would however be a problem with the above idea at the border between the original sides of whatever shape was further broken up into triangles... as the spacing would change (an unflipped triangle in the row where there should be a flipped one

Sorry if I'm being obtuse here Geoff, but how is your tiling system fundamentally different from CivII's?

To the player, it's not. That's half the point.

In a more in-depth way however, it's a (flawed) method to allow a civ-like game to model a spherical world instead of the cylinder that is currently used, which the current tile system can't do at all.

(More so, it does this will not drastically changing the way the game works in terms of tile shape/placement.)

HERE is an illustration of the previous chopped up triangles pattern put onto a globe of triangles fractally derived from an octahedron. I think that should clarify...

Good work Geoff! (and KrazyHorse - you almost have me convinced)

However, i still like the squares, and no convincing illustration will change my mind (sorry guys)

I therefore get to bragg that your ideas will never be implemented in civ3 (and for some reason i dont think the ****ing tile system will be customizable). its just too damn late. Sorry!
maybe in civ4

Ahhh...sorry Geoff, I'd missed a point in one of your previous posts. Good job, both on the idea and the illustration.
