Will Civ2 work under Windows ME?
Hello:
I need to purchase a new PC. The only operating system that I can find as being offered under Gateway, Dell, and Alienware is Windows ME. Will Civ2 work under this operating system?
Thanks,
JP

It should work...I have no doubt about that...but what O/S are you running now, because if you're running Win98 now, why bother getting ME? Save yourself some money...

I'm running Civ2 on Korean Windows ME and I have no problems at all. Oh, wait, I think the music is not working so well. Other than the music (which I usually turn off anyway) everything runs well with no crashes.

Civ2 MGE works fine on my wimME, but it you have an older production cd of Civ2, you may need to update you indeo drivers to a higher version. The current indeo drivers are available at ligos.com.

Lefty or others: There was a good thread a while ago that gave more step by step instructions for which driver to DL and how to do it. Could any of you all find it? I couldn't.

Thanks for the help. Right now I operate under Win98, but all that these companies seem to offer for new PC's is Windows ME, and I'm not proficient enough in the technical area to know what to do about that. If the game will work under it, I'll use it, I suppose.
Any problems with other games that you know about?
Thanks,
JP

Yes, typical of Microsoft's 80% solutions, several people have indicated problems with video and audio drivers for games that use ActiveX. The operating system forces the compatibility problems onto the user. Can be solved for the most part by going to the web and downloading the latest drivers. Still a pain in the rear. Civ II runs great on ME on my latest machine.

The was David Pritchard's civ vs win2k thread over a civfanatics -"civ2 problems and help" (still on the first page I believe) forum with the instructions do install winG & recent indeo drivers
but do not install "video for windows" from the civ disk, and the dll to delete if you had already installed video for windows.
the "winG" "video for windows" problems may be specific only to win2000.

Oops! Turns out the reason for no music was that I had accidently kicked the power bar under my desk that supplies power to the speakers and printer. Music is now working well with Civ2 MGE on Windows ME. In fact, it's more stable than some newer programs that were made for Windows ME.
Anatolia the Idiot (is that one on the Civ2 score board?)

I've been running under ME for over 3 months with the only problem being the music orginally. But after I moved the cd to the other cd drive, I've had no problems at all. And I host a lot of MP games.

I don't think anyone really got specific with this: I installed Civ2 and the FW addon to it and the music doesn't work, and it's in the right drive. Do I need to install drivers or is there a trick?

Uhm...well...when you buy your PC at a company like Dell or Gateway, you'll always get the O/S with it...but you can save yourself some money by buying your PC with a company that let's you completely configure your new PC personally...and you have Win98...that's good enough...I like Win98 better than WinME...I've heard nice things about Win2000...but never tried it...maybe should start looking for it ...but that's my view...

*BUMP*
So can anyone tell me why my music won't play for FW on a Win ME machine when I have the CD in?

and the dll to delete if you had already installed video for windows.
What's the DLL? Civ2 has installed fine, but the CiC and FW installations crash every time. I guess I could just burn the Civ2 directory on my old PC and use that.
