rules.txt
i have been playing civ2 for years now, and i have often tweaked "rules.txt"

what i have never been able to figure out is the slowest possible rate of technology acquisition.

what is the maximum possible value for the tech paradigm?

thank you in advance

I have no idea what the theoretical limit is, but I've played scenario's where the rate was set to impossibly slow, when the designer didn't want the player to ever discover a new technology.

I don't remember the exact name of the scenario. (I haven't got Civ installed at this computer - I am at the university right now). It must be something like 'Carthage', or 'Hannibal' - (suprise!). It was about the second Punic War, but I can't find it here in the database right now. Anyway, I believe that the tech paradigm was set to about 4000, and tech's requiered 60 or 70 turns, even with a rather large and developed empire.

I have a hunch though that the tech paradigm will be reset to 1 after a certain number, possibly after 255. Test it!

I, too, have seen tech rates set into the thousands. The logic is that no matter how prolific one's arrow production and how high the science rate, the player will never gain an advance during the game. New techs come by events or not at all.

I don't think you can alter the tech thingie in the rules.txt (even if it says you are supposed to be able to).
But when you make a scenario you can adjust it in the cheat menu-scenario parameters.
Thats the way it is done in scenarios.

I once doubled the tech paradigm in ToT and I didn't notice any difference at all - except that the AI seemed much slower. Not exactly what I was looking for.

If any of you chaps discover how the tech paradigm really works, or whether in fact you have to cheat to change it, I'd love to know.

(Resolves to check thread again)

much thanks for the responses.

i knew one could take out all the techs through the scenario editor, but i really didn't want to go that route. i haven't been daring enough to put the tech paradigm in the thousands. but i shall try. thanks again.

I have MGE and have always been able to change the tech rate via the rules.txt file. In my scenario, "Allied Force," I bumped up the tech rate to 500. The scenario lasts 78 turns and no techs are discovered.

Hope that gives you a starting point.
