Another happy evening at the zone
Since none of my regular players showed up Friday night (grrr!) I went to the zone for some multiplayer fun. I imagine its a bit like the way homosexual men go to public lavatories when their regular partners are away.
I was quickly invited into a game with another Australian, Nathan from Townsville, and a nice Dutch player called Jochem. I had to hotjoin. So far so good, the game had just started. It was King level, i.e. easy, but the timer was set at a brisk 1 minute.
My civ had one city and 2 units. I quickly established another city on a wine hex. As I was about to establish my third city one of Nathan's archers showed up right next to my new second city. I offered peace. He said he wanted a treaty and maps of cities. I said, "yeah right, just make peace." He took this as agreeing to his terms. When I didn't give him maps he attacked and destroyed my second city.
Whilst I was flaming him about that, I pressed b in King chat during my turn and my settler established a city on a very unfavourable spot within the city radius of my capital. Then a chariot showed up and took that undefended city.
I disarmed my capital which now had his archer right next to it and the chariot one hex away, planning to hotjoin in an ai civ and take revenge. I did this, and saw the dead civ sequence for the first time in a very long time, but he left the game shortly after (Grrr!). I left shortly after that because I found once I had built up my new civ to 8 cities, the one minute timer started driving me insane.
But I had fun - the zone isn't a complete write off. I told both about this place but I doubt they'll show up - Nathan said I was insufferably arrogant. Wonder why.

"insufferably arrogant"
I have been invited to Hot join a few games reasonably early. The results have been less than satisifying. One game I joined the AI had placed it's one city and was busy irrigating every square around the size 3 city. Within 3 turns, a half dozen of Hannibals elephants showed up to trash my capital and the second city that I had just created. Why did they bother to ask me to join? So the could brag about kicking someone's but? I've had that happen 3 or 4 times now. I think the player that joins late is at a big enough disadvantage, the least they can do is not wipe you out for at least the first 10-20 turns. Needless to say, I don't do this anymore, unless it's players I know and they agree to cut me some slack for the first few turns.

Sometimes it is fun to show them that a civ can rise from the ashes.

As i was typing that porevious post i just knew the exact wording your following post would have
I remember when i first got Civ 2 MPE and did a search online for civ2 MP and got straight to the Zone, it was great actually finding other palyers, other newbies like myself, of course there were some real immature people there like "Darknes of Niight" "Lord of Darkness" etc.. but I never palyed those type of people.
I met some cool dudes there and had great fun, one day i follwoed a link on Zone site that took me Apolyton, after a few months I met a few more Aussies and never went back to the zone.
It took nearly 12 months online to actually find out Alexanders Horse actually paled civ, he didnt just post at Off Topic (well Spam at OT reaaly) .
I have returned a few times to the Zone, but always take it with a grain of salt, knowing that games rarely if ever continue beyondf one session lasting no more than 1-2 hrs...
Good for fun , but not the real thing

Perhaps you should go to the Zone and dominate?
Then you could be King of the Imbeciles, and not have to deal with Horsey anymore?
I have found people there to be churlish and rude, personally.

Well...I hate to break it to you, but most fathers and sons have a period of conflict.
Its part of becoming a man, nephew.
But don't worry...you'll be right as rain years later, when you realize that the old man went through the same crap life is dealing out to you.
But beating up on the Zoners, regardless of how you and the sire are doing is a good idea. Make a name for yourself!

went back to the zone yesterday with berzerker. started a four player game after to three player games didn't work out becasue of tech issues.
the other guy never quites so i just shut down civ.
the four player game had berz, markus, strategicking and myself.
as it started, for some reason that rogue player from the last game was in too, i guess for some reason he connected in time, although it was a four not five player game.
strat leaves after his second settler is killed by barbs, good bye eight time gameleague champ *snicker* whined about his land which turned out to be awesome, though he was my neighbor
next to bail was markus, guess he didn't like being my neighbor either finally firestorm bailed too...leaving myself and berzerker to duel it out the rest of the game.
he had more land but i had the better start......
was alot of fun i got mikes SOL, and leos, he had library, HG, and Suns
he was leading on the pg but i was disappointed that everyone quit.... oh well its the zone i guess

Gee, Saturday Berz knocked off my second city the turn I created it, then killed it again when I sent the next settler to the same location. (Third time was a charm) My land started bad but looked a little better after some exploration. Needless to say it was a long night. BUT I DIDN"T DROP OUT AND RUIN THE FUN FOR THE OTHERS. Smartfart lost his capital and other cities to the barbs the previous night. BUT HE DIDN"T DROP OUT AND RUIN THE FUN FOR THE OTHERS.
I guess I'm trying to make a point, but I'll be damned if I know what it is

Gee, I wonder if our "champion" strategicking considers that game a loss on his record... probably not since he "retired" early in the game
The zone is a great place to get some practice, test some strategies, and just play when non of the regular gang is around... just don't count on people who are behind staying in the game

Rah--was that the game I was in?
Man...talk about trial by fire.
I was in a War4/Aztec (who was that?) sandwich. I thought War was going to waste me right off, but luckily I got to the GW before he could get too motivated.
BTW, Caesar felt really bad about dropping...guess his computer crashed hard.
If that's the kind of competition I can expect, I'm going to have to really ramp it up.
You know you're in trouble when you're in 5th place in the Demographics.
I seem to hold up fine, but toward the end, there is always a huge dropoff for me...what am I doing wrong? I managed to build a Wonder...my cities were all good sized...just seem to have a hard time rocketing up the tech tree like others do.
You guys weren't trading behind my back, were you?!?

Noone Home at the Zone
I've checked in a few times at the zone and the major problem I find is a lack of players. Time zones are a problem for us Australians there as well.
I did see a guy called Jochem there a couple of times but after playing him once on a 1 minute timer I didn't feel like doing it again. With lag, he's in Holland, 1 minute is insane.

played a guy the other day there, he started on best lans lot sof grasland, pheaseant around and whales too, the rest of us started on mountainous regions or swamps ... He quickly built 4 citys, and lots of horses. took me a while to realsie he had started with bonus techs!!! on a small world by 3200 he had surrounded my civ with citys (he had 20 citys to my 4) forutnalty I had to goto shops for wifey , so I surrendered and left... An unhappy ZONE experience

Wham bam thank you maam
One good thing about the zone is its a good place to go to have a bit of anonymous warmongering. Reps counts for nothing over there so once I was done over (see opening post) I realised I could do unto others without any inhibitions

Yes...and your restraint is usually so tangible.
I think the zone is just a playground for punks...and somehow they've found Apolyton and are infesting it with their lowbrow brand of chest thumping.
I think the silverbacks need to whup on a little junior monkey ass, personally.

Could be my bad - I always tell zonies about this forum - we need new players.
I know its hard to believe but many civ players have never heard of this site or the people here.

more zone
Hydey and I ventured to the zone again tonight. We found someone from Germany called "King Rob" to play with us. He immediately destroyed my undefended second city upon first contact. Then he started attacking my capital which was defended by a phalanx and an archer and was on a river. After losing 2 or 3 horse in suicide attacks he retired from the game with not so much as a goodbye. Then Hydey and I quit.
If you go to the zone, go with a friend. Hydey and I talked about him all the time on icq.

lol... these people that you guys talk about at the zone -I- have never even heard of! But the zone is a lot like here I suppose. If you play the right people, then you know they aren't going to bail on you in the middle. It's as simple as that. I can refer you to some players there if you like.

Yes SuperSneak, that was the game you were in.
Small worlds keep things interesting. Space is at a premium.
Every now and then we get a "snoozer, everyone develop game" but most are usually very lively.
