I use Arii's method, Just use the goto command on the settler, then clear it every step and build the road. This will work except when rivers are involved prior to bridge building.

The picture is really goodlooking, but the goto command is easy and accurate.

But will you build the road if there are mountains only? It is better to know where the road will go in advance.
