Whats the best multiplayer option?
If multiplayer was taken out of civ 3, and you could choose to keep one part of it, what part would you choose? Personally i choose hotseat.

Sorry Alex, but to decide I should have some more info about the movement rules during MP: I mean, if we are limited to Turn Base mode I won't play MP no matter how good will be Civ III, because of turn lenght I can live with only in single player.
May be Sid's team has something different to reveal, because on some news they mentioned of a new MP mode that they where testing...
I'll be happy to try Internet multiplayer Civ III if only it'll use Simultaneous (execution) Turns, over a dedicated server that host the whole map and resolve end turns.
As mentioned so many time I risk to be banned this will dramatically cut turn time, greatly reduce risks of cheating, will emphasize the strategical part of the game and keep game tense enough.
So you should count my vote as "Never", while the true is "I'll love on Internet if only..."

This is kind of a nitpick, but...
It seems to me that you really only have 2 choices, not 4:
a) LAN / Internet: if you can do internet, you can do LAN.
b) Hotseat / PBEM: just save and mail your hotseat file.
Sorry, I don't really care if it is 2 or 4, I just don't like to think about making unpleasant choices; also, we don't want to give Firaxis any ideas - what if they took this as a "suggestion"?

IF I absolutely HAD to choose, PBEM would be my vote. I hope they give PBEM as an actual option and iron out all the dificulties that are inherint in Civ2 PBEM games. That would be cool.

LAN: I don't know enough other people that play civ to make it a fun game.
Hotseat: Not only do I know enough other people that play civ to make it a fun game, but even if I DID, having to keep getting up and getting down for hundreds of turns would be terribly tedious.
PBEM: This has potential, only that it's so damn slow, and you can't rely on people to be timely.
Internet: It's fast, and easy to find enough people online to play, and no damn switching seats around. Of course, it's hard to negotiate times possibly, there ARE drawbacks, but this is the best option among them, IMO.

You have got a good point, however i like to invite a friend over, get some lunch and sit down for a game of civ 2, it's also fun cause you can plan attacks, and have breaks but i would definantly say internet is second best.

In defense of PBEM, of course its slow. In fact, that is easily the point. Just spend a few minutes a day if things are going fast. What a great option for people who like civ but are fairly busy! Of course the reliability factor is probably not that great, but finding reliable people is hard to do in this world anyway.
Hotseat might be great if they really improve it and if I find any friends here that actually like civ.

I have a LAN in my house and on Wednesday, I'm having two of my friends over to play a game of SMAX. Nothing can beat spending the day playing SMAX, being able to talk to the people you're playing with. Especially since we all kind of suck so we'll be sharing techs .
If LAN wasn't a choice I'd go PBEM though, because a TCP/IP game freezes so often.

Internet is best as i dont have a LAN (only 1 computer) and hotseat gets too crowded with 7 people in one room.... PBEM removes the tension of online Diplmoacy ....

We also must remember that Firaxis has said that they will implement a new option, but they don't want to say what yet...

reaaly hard to imagine a new option not covered by the above , maybe they jsut mean a different way fo doing one of the above, i hope for everyone they leave in all modes as in Civ2 with the addition of a proper PBEM game for those that like that

Head-to-Head modem would have to be my top-choice,
followed closely by hotseat.

How about simultaneous execution, aka server-based asynchronous turns?

As I have a slow modem connection and I thus find playing over the internet very slow, I will have to opt for PBEMs being the most important for me personally, although the problem with these is that they take so bloody long to play a game!
