I think it is another of those AOK-like ideas and I do not think it is a good one, as both games have different scope.
In Civ3 every unit is exactly that - a unit. It is not a single soldier, it represents a number of soldiers. Consequently, it would be strange if a unit of trained soldiers could be attacked and/or even destroyed by a pack of lions etc.
Conversely, the same would apply to the taming idea. Have you ever heard of an army of lions being unleashed against the regular soldiers?
(of course armies used animals, like horses, elephants etc., but this is already incorporated in the game and IMHO does not need improvement).
Hence my vote.
