i just tried this... why doesnt the land at the north and south able to support civs?

Are you talking about a world with all ocean, one island (with you on it), and north and south poles? If so, all AI civs died because they were settled on glacier, leaving you as the sole civ. World conquest, and all you did was keep breathing.

the reason is that 'the computer didn't find suitable starting locations for all players' (the 'n' function in mapmaker iirc)
