Buying Civilization 2 Gold
Hi I have somehow managed to lose my cd and now I want to buy the gold edition. Unfortunately it seems as if it is no longer available anywhere. As far as I know TOT and CTP are significantly different to MPG right?

Appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Yes - CtP is a different game completely, ToT has an 'original game' setting that makes it into 'conventional Civ2' whatever that might be, but is not compatible with either v2.42 or MPG when it comes to things like save games.

Here in the UK copies of MPG are like hen's teeth - rather hard to find and currently even SP Civ has been very thin on the ground - if anyone knows a supplier that has stock and will ship internationally there could be quite a demand ...

ToT compatible MGE... no.... and yes
with Civconverter v1.4 ( from Angelo Scotto ) u can "convert" Civ2
scenarios to ToT version. I used it easily for 5 of my scenarios
Antic, Mafia, Egypte, WW2 and 1804.

If TOT DOES have the original version in it then I might as well order that. Hopefully by 'conventional' they mean the MPG version without stuff like 'multiple dimensions' which I don't much like the sound of.

Thanks for your help. In the meantime if anyone does find a copy of MPG somewhere or find they are 'bored' of it (shock! horror!!) then please please please let me know.

MPG is available in my area. If you're really desperate to get it, we could agree on a price and I'll get it and send it to you. The only thing for us to discuss would be shipping price. The cost of the game itself is $15 plus tax.

that would be great! Shipping is no problem. I have a friend in the US coming over here soon so if you could ship to him then everything would be fine. I'll give you the address if that's ok with you?

Thanks alot.

Sure, that should be no problem. My guess is that $25 US should cover everything, but that's without checking on shipping. I would assume that would even allow me to pack it in a padded envelope or wrap it up. I would prefer to receive the money before I send it, so let me know if that's acceptable to you.

though you seem to have this under control, if you already have MGE installed but just can't play it there are other solutions. One is the no cd crack, though I don't know if the cd will be required during installation. Another is buy the ToT cd, MGE looks for ANY civ 2 cd be it 2.42, CiC, FW, MGE or ToT.

Cedric is right--any Civ2 cd will work. I have both ToT and MGE, and I can use either cd to play either version. If you'd rather go the route of picking up a copy of ToT locally, let me know. Otherwise, I'll plan on going forward with getting you a copy of MGE and sending it.

Farazh. RWPrice:

Are there any compatibility concerns that might crop up? I bring this up because companies sometimes make varying versions of their games that aren't always compatible planet-wide. This is especially true in the console market, but I'm not sure as to how extensive it is in the PC/Macintosh market.

Cedric I don't have MGE installed any more so I don't think I can do that. Of course if TOT was available here then I could have just gone for TOT and pretended like it was MGE but alas it isn't.

Cyber, compatability shouldn't be an issue. I have bought games from the US and UK before also and they have all worked fine. You are right about this being an issue in the console market though.

OK. Just thought I'd play it safe by raising the possibility ... didn't want anyone to find out until it was too late in case compatibility issues were relevant.

Sold out!
Farazh,
I went out at lunch today to buy the game for you. Bad news. The copies that I have seen over the last four months were sold this week! I checked with a sales person and she told me that she sold them just yesterday! So, I went to two other stores where I had seen it, and it's nowhere to be found! I can easily find the original Civ2 for Windows 3.1, the one that's not multiplayer. I also found 3 copies of Test of Time for $15 each, the same price that I seen for MPG. Let me know how you want to proceed. I'll keep looking in other stores, but hold onto your money for now.

I also sent this via email, but I'm posting it here in case you don't get the email. Does anyone else have any ideas on how to help Faraz?

Man talk about baaaad luck!! The conspiracy theorist within me tells me that its some wise guy at Apolyton who bought the copies to spite me.

Can anyone tell me if I will be missing out ANYTHING by buying TOT instead of MGE. As long as I can play the game just like I could with MGE I don't mind. In fact it might even be better because that way I'll get to have MGE plus whatever is added on for TOT.

Just went to the TOT forum to check if someone had already asked the question about the difference between MGE and TOT. Sure enough it was there just like every other CIV issue under the sun can be found on this site One thing I couldn't find out was whether all the extra features can be turned off or not. If someone could just let me know about that then it would be a great help!

You have the choice of what type of game you want to play when you start the game such as Original, Extended and Fantasy but for that matter you can download my ToT to MGE patch and play MGE.

Test of Time
Faraz, I know that opinions vary greatly, but I actually prefer ToT over MGE. The graphics are a bit dark, especially if you're accustomed to Civ2 2.42 or MGE, but I like the unit animations. You won't get the animated advisors or the wonder movies, but I don't think that's a big deal at all. The neat thing is that you can also play the extended original version, the Midgard (fantasy) scenario, or the sci-fi version. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you go with ToT. I did see 3 copies of ToT at our local Target store.

I'm going to be away for a week, but I'll check back here when I return. Hopefully, if you still need Civ2, I can find it somewhere else.

Cedric seems like you have a patch ready for any and all civ needs. So you're patch allows me to pay MGE using TOT? In that case I don't see any reason not to go for TOT. In the week that rwprice is gone I will try and find it here else he can send it over to me when he gets back.

Rasputin. Don't think the thought hasn't crossed my mind. If anyone from Microprose minds then I can show them this forum to demonstrate how I tried to do it the legal way. Still its not possible to burn it here because nobody I know has a copy.

Farazh, I'm back in town, and wanted to check with you to see if you're still looking for MGE. Let me know if you are, and I'll go looking again after work. I haven't given up hope of finding a copy yet, so let me know. I'll check this board throughout the day before I leave work.

Andy, click the Chips & Bits link at the top of the forums page. They're selling Civ2 for $9.95 (the Windows 3.1 version, which is 2.42, I believe). That's as cheap as I've seen it in stores. I have never seen add-on disks sold separately in stores around here.
