Alliances
In Civ2 if you had an ally it would virtually mean nothing. If you went to a war they could care less and vice versa. I think you should have to have a responsibility to help your allies in wars. If you don't other civs won't want to sign any treaties with you because they won't think they will get backed up in a war. Plus your civ would most diffently break the treaty off and if they were militaristic enough they might declare war on you. So what I'm trying to say is that their should be reprecutions for not helping your allies out in wars.
There should also be different kinds of allies. You could have a non-military treaty- this would mean that you would TRADE sciences, TRADE resources, etc..., a military treaty- this would mean that you would be obligated to help this ally out in a war, and a total treaty- this would be the combination of a non-military treaty and a military treaty. I put trade in caps lock because you shouldn't be required to give away things for free or even expected to, such as in Civ2.
In Civ2 sometimes I would have an ally that would love to pillage my roads, mines, or irrigation. Why would any ally do this? Allies need to respect each others property.
Overall, allies need to have more importance. Instead of being somebody that you'll use the whole game then once you get a high production and a great military, you'll attack them or vice versa.

A fantastic idea
One that has been suggested and ignored many times over.....
Perhaps too late for Civ 5 but maybe in Civ 6 !!!

i believe there are such things.
i forget where, but i remember reading there are many different forms of err... i cant think of the word. there are different states to be in with a nation.
if u sign an alliance, the ZOC rules still apply unless you sign some sort of "free moving" pact. i read that somewhere.
i bet theres dozens of others, and hope theres a "free trade" policy, where you basically SHARE your combines resources.

I want to be able to form strong alliances that lead, as time passes by, to the creation of a new and greater civ, to simulate things like the German or Italian unification, etc.
Of course, you could only try to join with an AI controlled civ, but I think it would be geat, and it could be a good prize for peacenik players. The way culture works now could help a lot to this kind of unifications.

I don't really think this idea. I don't because somebody is very peaceful but is a poor civ might want to join with one of their long time, powerful allies. It's not fair that some crappy civ should become good because they have a good ally to join with. All Civs should remain seperate through out the whole game.

It's not just a matter of time, but a matter of what you have to offer to the other civ as well. No powerful civ would want to join some crappy civ, but a tiny civ would be interested in doing so. It might be its only chance to survive.
But, of course, they'd need to have similar cultures also. That may be simulated through a long trade relationship, along with the aformentioned military/diplomatic alliance.

i dont think he really wants one globular civ here.
i think he just wants an agreement so air-tight that they fight the same wars, and trade freely with eachother.
like an uber alliance .

This is also something I would like to see. If he is talking about having the "one globular civ" then I don't like it all.

Why is this thread uninformed? Making alliances more binding is an important suggestion.

Spending maybe a half an hour to an hour a day here at Apolyton doesn't neccesarily mean you don't have a life. Some people use this thing called time management which enables them to spend some time here at Apolyton.
