I've always liked Masters of Magic, Jr. (momjr) from FW. I'm not sure if you would qualify this as being for "basic" CIV 2, though, since it's from FW.

I liked the alien invasion scenario. As an alternative, download the top 10 maps without looking at the descriptions and play them randomly.

Alien invasion is terrific. So is Apocalypse - both from the MP CD's.
Lord of Rings (best game I ever played!) from Apolyton db along with my Gwani modpak which is no. 8 in the most d/l top 20 with a credible rating of 6.3. (Please d/l the sound file!) http://apolyton.net/civ2/
LoR is rated 7.

can't remeber where I got it from, But I once had a pretty good WWI scenario (after I reduced the strenght of the air units ... they were WAY to strong ... 1 fighter unit, representing about 10 bi-planes could easyly take out tens of thousands of infantry)
played it with Italy, got tons of money from UK and france, rush-build an industry, and took out Turkey, half of austria and a third of germany

Both Red Front and 2194 Days of War are for FW, not Basic CivII.

Maybe he just means that not anything for TOT or CTP, so all that junk would classify as BASIC Civ2, I suppose. BTW, Mike Jeszenka's Sever Year's War is my favorite
