Terrain Transform
Has any1 heard if the terrain transform is as unrealistic as in Civ2? I mean, in Civ2 when changing terrain, the change went through a cycle, I don't remember the cycle perfectly, but I think it's something like this:

Snow -> mountains -> Dessert -> Plains -> Grassland

Or something like that. I don't know about you, but I think this is a strange cycle!

Shouldn't it be more like direct change instead of going through a cycle?

And what about making some terrains unchangeable, I haven't heard of any nation that has transformed big mountains to grassland?

The terraforming in civ2 WAS a bit unrealistic. Maybe it should be impossible to change some kinds of terrains into some kinds of terrain (like mountians to grassland).

yea.

personally, i dont think it's possible to do that TODAY (i could be wrong).

to turn a MOUNTAIN RANGE into a grassland? and all within 4 or so years?

i think the FOREST command is the only one that makes reasonable sense.

also, to change ONE SQUARE or terrain is stupid.

sure it makes sense from a city perspective, but the terrain would eventually get swallowed up again.

desertification of medeterrainian africa is a serious issue. farmland is becomming desert rapidly.

try changing part the sahara to fertile grassland and get back to me.

I think it is posible, but this would be VERY expensive, since they need:

1. Clear the mountains for all people livin' in the area
2. Have all kinds of machinery running 24 hours a day, in all (And I mean ALL) places there need to be done something, and that at once
3. A lot of money for number 2

This means to get rid of ONE mountain you need (properly) more money than all countries in the world has together, all those workers do need their pay

Actually all you need is a medium sized auto-drill ( most mining companies have some spare ) and a small sized H-bomb and kablamm you have some nice flat land that will be livable in in perhaps 1000 years. According to George W'eee Bush anyway.

I agree that terrain transformation needs to be reworked, but I'll leave it to the geniuses here to provide a solution.

Did anyone ever succeed in transforming a mountain? I tried it several times but gave up. Mountains can be leveled though, just ask the Peabody Coal Company.

It would be nice if tropical mountains could be terraced for intensive agriculture.

I did succed in transforming a mountain to grassland, but it took time, I think it was about 10-20 turns or something.
