Opinion on the Current Civ3 Graphics
Well taking this idea from another thread: Apolyton Link
Overall, I like the current graphics. Do I think they could be better, yes, but mainly by darkening some of the colors. If I had my way the oceans would be a deeper blue and the colors less muddy looking. But again, I'll hold final opinion till the release, but overall, I'm pretty pleased

I don't think they are horrible, rather not so good
I could imagin better by today's standards. I don't really like the color mix either, and irrigation tiles particularlty, looks more like swamp.
It is OK, but definitley not impressive.

I say they are great! In the movies, I was very very impressed. Very nice job...

I am not that happy about them...
those mountains don't look so nice, and the green stuff over some of the tiles?
BTW, there's a river going over a mountain in one of the latest screenshots...

let's see...
look at the top picture which was editted from Firaxis screenshot by Contradiction in this thread:
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...threadid=22037
then look at the bottom picture by Firaxis and THEN vote...i bet there will be a lot less "great's" and "ok's"
i originally thought that contradiction's art was the new revamp by firaxis at first...i was sooo happy, then i realized that civIII still had the same Mush with rivers and roads on TOP of the mountain rather than TROUGH the mountains

Contradiction:
BTW - very nice job on the picture. Everything looks MUCH more realistic, especially the plains!
Note to Firaxis: have you art team contact Contradiction before the game is release! PLEASE!!

Everything so far looks great except maybe for the river that hovers over the mountain, but they will probably fix this by October. I don't see why people don't like the irrigation; it looks much more realistic than Civ2.

I liked more the ContradictioN refinement of pic, too.
I can understand screenshot are from early stage of game development, so my horror about river floating on top of mountain, road over the legs of horse, etc. is a bit on "pause" mode.
But if that is really their final graphic for map tiles, definitelly Firaxis must put that design team back at work, hitting them very hardly with a cub

Not so bad, actually, but let's hope that the roads are made to look right over mountains and hills.

I believe the final version will be ok. This is only a bug. You'll see. But on the other hand I never cared about graphics.
Take a look at main screen of the civ 3. I mean if that's not phantastic...it is to me.

Well, I think they met their goals of having it look like that painting, but so far it looks to muddled. Artistic? Perhaps. Something I'd like to spend hours staring at?

it is horrible, at least the part that was presented to us. somehow i simply think that it cannot turn out to be that bad at the end. i mean, they are serious people and they DO want to make some money. graphics like these would kill sales.
trdi, i did not know slovenia bought tanks

c'mon, the graphics are ok !
I don't really care about graphics (I still prefer the civ2 graphics above anything else)
Those bugs with rivers over mountains etc. need to be tweaked indeed, but I think it'll be ok.
Actually I like those mountains ! Am I alone in that ?

I really hope this will improve. The names of the cities are not clearly readable and lots of other things look silly. Like LaRusso, I hope they are smart enough not to bring civ3 on the market this way...

How can anyone say these graphics are great!?! They are plain horrible; I like civ 2's better, and that was 6 years back! Ok, maybe some people don't care about the graphics, but for me it is very important that they be good enough (they don't need to be great) that I'll enjoy looking at them for several hours and they will give me a feel for the world. Sometimes it's just nice to sit back, look at the world and then try to imagine what it would be like to live in your own world. It's a nice break from micromangement and lets your head cool down a little . That won't be possible with these graphics. (This was one of the reasons why I enjoyed playing ctp for a few games, until I saw all the horrible bugs and ai which made having a good game impossible.) Without decent graphics, you just can't become part of your world; the game becomes too pure micromanagement mixed with strategy.
But before you blindly accept the graphics, look at games like ctp and all the other recent games. I'm not asking for great graphics. I don't care about 3d leaders and units and this animation. The graphics just have to be crisp, clean, bright, and somewhat realistic and detailed. Forests are not patches of trees separated by large expanses of grassland; they are supposed to be uniform. Mountains should form connected mountain chains. And the ocean is not supposed to be yellowish! These are just a few of the many problems with the graphics.

I can just hope graphics will improve before they ship the game, or that they are customizable so someone can upgrade them with a mod.

I say they are great .
These are the best graphics in a Civ game by far. The animations are top notch and I'm very much looking forward to playing the game!
