goat cheese and crusades
1) Goat cheese
I have met the SGs.
They allowed me to tell you that the French capital of goat cheese is named Sainte Maure (that's why I wrote it was 'holy'), a small town about 30 km south of Tours. The SGs are staying quite close to the capital (... of goat cheese) in a little village called Pussigny. They have bright sun, a swimming pool, and a reasonable quantity of red, white and rosé wine. It may therefore be expected that their next secret plans turn to be even more secret than usual.

2) Crusades
Raz
I feel sorry that you stopped. None of us is ever completely satisfied with the way he just played, and none of us really cares about winning this succession game, so I bet you should have gone on playing, even if you felt you might have done better.

Marquis
Nice and christian auntie, taking care of those youngsters while holy Marquis is riding eastwards at full speed...
(take a look at the techtree though, and tell me what you think about 'holy devotion')

Hate to interrupt, but I just had to say, great thread guys. I was stuck at work last night and read the whole thing - took an hour

And I'll probably play the Crusader scenario in CiC just to get a feel for what you're facing. (I know, that's not the correct scenario, but I don't have FW/MGE)

Can't wait to see how it ends. From what I've seen so far, sounds like a good challenge!

Thanks for the cheers
Whose turn is it to play
It's the Gits I think
Are they back from Goat Cheese City

Gits
Julius
IIRC the Gits should be back to Liverpool on Monday.
IIRC SG1 is next on the list.
So you probably get your next savegame on Wednesday or Thursday.
Wait and see.

STYOM
The CiC 'crusades' scenario has a smaller map and less bizarre units, but I'm sure it is also quite a challenge when played as the English.
Don't forget to post your result when you finish it (if you feel like it) and your name will be written in the tiny 'CiC scenarios Hall of Fame'.

(La Fayette, looking at someone who plays a lot of scenarios and never posts one's brilliant results, so that even his best friends have no idea how good he is)

Don't worry LaFayette, I'm not in such a hurry to play
It's just that I know by experience that when the rythms slows too much in a succesion game, it can be hard to regain speed and finish it at all

Hi guys, we're back and on the job of running the Church Militant in search of some decent red wine... I mean Infidels of course

Game d/led, on SG2s machine so he will probably play first and pass on to me (SG1) - I should have my own machine back running in the next day or two and maybe even on line by the end of the week - we shall see...

___________
SG1 - playing with SG2's machine

Holy Devotion
La Fayette, it seems I once again failed to clearly state what I intended. What I meant to say with "one more" useful tech was after the current study of theology. Must remind oneself to reread what I've just written before posting... Perhaps a little vin rouge et fromage de chevre will clear the head?

Also, monsieur, try playing the scenario Rome 280bc on the Scenario League site. That might be another good one for a succession game.

Welcome back, SG's. The heathens are trembling in fear.

Julius, I'm glad to hear you feel safe with the Marquis at the helm, keeping God's will in deed.

The Anchorite SG1 resumed control of the Church Militant late in the Year of Our Lord 1175 and promptly thrust the Research Rate down to 80 turns in favour of a cash rich economy. Several launderettes were completed around the Empire and the absence of a well placed Missionary to convert the revolting city of Bremen was seriously regretted ...

1176 - Coal: Oslo-Luebeck: 70g
1177 - HRE develop Philosophy - of no obvious utility to us.
1178 - 1182 - not much ...
1183 - Spice: Dublin-Bordeaux: 180g; Gold: Limerick-Bordeaux: 64g; Beads: Cardiff-Hamburg: 82g; Posen converted for 424g
1184 - Gold: Lund-Magdeburg: 96g; now half way to Theology ...
1185 - not a lot, but several caravans are now poised for delivery ...

Good luck ...

Be reassured - the High Admiral (SG2) has the con - but I understand tha he is beset by both the Holy Roman Empire and people requiring his professional services [NOW!] and so will probably be another 24 hours or so before he can post ...

Sorry for the delay, but I was catching up on work after the holiday.

1185 Holy Roman Empire bribes Posen - 45 gold lost. Docks rushed at Viborg and Skara.
1186 Bribed Posen back for 714g ... was it worth it? (38g plundered): Caravans to Lisbon: 77g/80g/72g/64g
Barbarians cleared from Scotland. A Baltic Navy is planned.
1187 Silk to Paris 252g
1188 Silver to Exeter 80g; Production of Lubeck's Coastal fortress destroyed.
1189 Gold/Gems to Boullon 156g/74g: Ikea founded... well, two gold and a pheasant. The Pope dies.
1190 Lubeck + Hanseatic League (Adam Smith's) stormed by vet Galleas (saves 74g a turn). The Pope dies again!
1191 Sabotage of Holy Roman cities commenced. Health insurance needed for Popes, because he's dead again!!
1192 Coastal Fortress destroyed at Stettin; Coal to Bremen 200g; Famagusta caputured ... you ask me HOW? Well, about two turns ago I received one of the "historical" messages (like the Pope dies) that some English troops had reached Cyprus. Some NON knights appeared from nowhere ... and the rest is history!
1193 Wine to Rheims 165g; Bremen sacked - 107g plundered
1194 Stettin captured - 103g plundered - now Magdeburg, the northern capital of the Holy Roman Empire, is in our sights. Gems to Hamburg 76g. Hides to London 85g. Salt to Boullon 78g.
We are now "weak" - no longer "pathetic"

NB The four dips in the galleon off the African coast are hoping to steal some techs from the Turks and Fatimids.

Please take your time, Julius!
I didn't feel like playing civ last week, and that leaves me with the difficult task to finish the 'Discover' scenario quite as fast as arii did (2/3 of the cities conquered by 1647; that is the rule we agreed upon). I suppose that keeps me busy until tuesday (I don't wish to beat him, since he was so clever, but I would love to finish dead heat if I can manage it).

Je suis perdu dans la correction de 40 dissertations et n'en sortirai (vivant ou pas) que mercredi.
But after that it looks as if I could play my turns

At last, I’ve played my turns. Sorry for the delay and for the poor quality of play. It was not worth the waiting.

1195 : we incite the barbarian city of Tannenberg to revolt for 424 gold. No new tech to be stolen in the Al-Andalus Caliphat.
1196 : we discover Theology. Holy Devotion is next. Slave Trade was also on the list, but I decided to remain faithful to the faith ... Silver merchants in Bouillon. 185 gold. We steal university from the Fatimids.
1197 Barbarian city of Lublin converted for 424 gold. Merchants in Rouen for 48 gold. We steal philosophy from the Fatimids.
1198 Our population exceed 10 millions. Our ship full of missionnaries has been sunk by the Fatimid navy. The HR empire has lost many knights and not recaptured any city in a vast but useless offensive. We decide to divert to galleas to avenge our lost in the Mare Nostrum.
1199 Merchants gain 250 gold combined in Rouen and Rheims.
1200 We learn that the next crusades will be against the Byzantines, thanks to a venetian alliance with the fatimids, mmmh.
1201 more gold in Rheims.
1202 we preach to the furthest lands and convert Kiev !
1203 more gold, mainly to Poitiers (150)
1204 we convert Nicopolis for 154 gold. and Riga for 424.

Missionnairies should convert more barbarians cities in the east (some are on their ways). I’ve stocked troops against Hamburg, but did not feel strong enough yet to attack.
We have now 3324 gold . It is now all left in the expert hands of LaFayette.
My 10 turns did not do much good, but not much harm either.
Except that time is (or only was) money

Warning
This is a message to all advisers (and especially kcbob since he's next on the list):
The unit named 'Siege Tower' should 'ignore city walls' (that is written in the description of the unit).
IMO it doesn't (I just lost 4 Siege Towers testing that... hope you forgive me).
My advice is: 'don't attack any city with walls' (except if you attack from the sea with vet galleas, after having checked that there is no coastal fortress inside).
'Holy devotion' is ours and the inquisitor is the equivalent of a spy (as expected ). All the nice methods using spies are now at your disposal. Don't waste time and money building useless siege towers.

1204 - 1214
10 more years (about 80 left IIRC)
My priorities:
1) Discover 'Holy Devotion'.
2) Make London 'spit' gold.
3) Build some peasants willing to build roads, badly needed in the eastern part of the English Empire.
4) Nicely 'convert' a few more cities in the South East.

Here is the log:
1205: Food to London + Gold to Paris (100g) + Gems to Paris (116g) + settings in order to celebrate in London and some other cities.
1206: London size 19 (celebrating) + Food to London + Luxuries down + Science up
1207: London size 20 + Food to London + Dye to Paris (98g)
1208: London size 21 + Food to London
1209: London size 22, 11 light blue faces = growing in size would mean stop celebrating. No more food to London.
1210: Wine to Reims (255g, must be champagne!)
1211: HOLY DEVOTION (pray brothers!) + Coal to Poitiers (210g) + Nis converted (424g) + Buda converted (424g).
Now researching 'Architecture' (= engineers), with science set at zero, since the Holy Romans have just discovered Architecture, and one of our brand new inquisitors is going to steal it from them very soon.
1212: Dye to Paris (265g) + Hides to London (175g) + Coal to London (136g) + Wine to London (186g) + Belgrad converted (354g = cheaper with inquisitors).
1213 Gold to Clermont (225g)

Results obtained:
London 'spits' gold (Cash Flow of the civ increased from 277 to 432, with beakers up from 63 to 117), inquisitors available, 16 peasants (to be replaced by engineers quite soon), Belgrad not 'very' far from Rome.
Have a nice time kcbob!

The list, iirc: (correct me if I'm wrong!)

1. kcbob
2. rasputin
3. moi
4. SG1
5. SG2
6. Julius Brenzaida
7. La Fayette

I say we pm kcbob and rasputin. If no response comes in two days, I'll take over and continue the game.

wake up kcbob!
Marquis,
I pmed kcbob after finishing my turn.
Please pm him again and also Rasputin. I think it is fair to let you play if you get no answer within 2 days, so that this game doesn't go too slowly. I'm sure no one would mind if either kcbob or Raz plays after you.
