SG1, the AI is stuck in Monarchy, just as you are stuck in Fundamentalism. I purposefully switched all the AIs out of despotism before saving out the scenario.

Thanks for that Tom - I've been sh*tting myself thinking what will happen when the English or French switch to a representative government (or even Commie) and their research rockets - hence the large army and the even larger Spy Corps in reserve for that fateful day ....

Tom, a quick clarification on the AI govt. fix in OCC12 - it's not Monarchy all the way through is it? I was having the trouble in my game because there were two Democracies and two Republics from the mid-game onwards!

Tonic, I set all of them to Monarchy initially, and assumed that since I was forbidden to switch governments, they would be too. They all stayed Monarchy in my game, but maybe they have the same option as you do when they trade for a government advance - a one time chance at revolution.

So SG1, you might still have to contend with a Democracy or two.

Good setup Vik. I expect your intention was for our reputation to take a beating so that diplomatic relations would suffer for the rest of the game. My reputation fell to dishonorable until 880AD, when it changed to questionable. With my bad reputation, AIs refused to form alliances with me. I started to prepare for a build up of my military by building a diplomat in 950BC (a secondary purpose of this was to bribe a boat). In the end bribing a bunch of NONE units for defence proved unneccessary.

Strangely, when I switched to Republic, I was able to form alliances with all 4 AIs I had contact with. This made the rest of the game pretty straightforward. It took me a while to get all my land improved, but once done I had plenty of gold coming in with 1 advance every 2 turns. I was even able to keep up that advance rate after flight.

That's pretty cool you managed to get some workable alliances. Although I fear once again I have submitted a scenario that will be doubly difficult for the MPGE players.

It seems like (you and me, anyways) have evolved our scenarios into taking one important OCC aspect away. Last time, you took WeLuv and the extra trade arrows out of it, this time I took away your spotless reputation. Earlier, I tried to take away contact (for as long as possible) and trade routes. It's pretty interesting.

Luckily, when I test played, the spanish always built a city two squares south of my southern rock. That way, I could post a sentry there and not violate his city squares. I was able to bribe several barbs that went to attack this city. Cheap NON units.

Yes, although for me it's a matter of just making the scenario "different".

Speaking of which, I've just thought up my next scenario. It will involve only a single AI opponent (with no restarting dead civs). Kind of the opposite of the current scenario where you have to kill off 4 neighbours right away. This time, if you kill the AI civ off the game ends.

I'm going to play the game through to see if Raging Hordes produces too many barbarians for the AI civ to handle. Might have to lower the barb activity in this one.

SG1, it never occured to me to avoid the starting site, not kill off my neighbours, and go looking for an alternative site.

I landed in 1815. Not bad considering that I didn't get Monarchy from a hut in 3900 BC (lucky Tom ) and three of the four civs I killed restarted away from the main continent.

To me the thought did occur to let them live, but with the four wheat (minable to silk) this looked like the intended starting site. Besides, I didn't know if there would be any other decent city sites nearby.

In the opening hut, I got 25 gold, so I decided to escape. I found a decent site, but it had defense problems. I got an alliance with the spanish who soon dominated the world. As soon as I got space flight, they attacked, and I could not survive.

I think I may have had an OCC 1st.For me anyhow.Due to a cursed Japanese destroyer sneak attack,I lost my 2 engineers late.The result was global warming.Rather embarrasing,when you think my 1 city threw the world into catastrophic climate changes resulting in world wide famine.

I actually thought I was going to be destroyed late by the evil Japanese but I managed to squeak thru.

The starting site with the four wheat and the river junction was too tempting to resist. So I held my breath and plunged into Vik’s dishonourable reputation handicap. As it turned out, like Paul, I had in essence only 3 other AI civs on my continent. And I suffered from the Tom deM Effect as well when the silly AI plopped the second generation Germans sandwiched between Beijing and Shanghai and it took no time for the powerful Spanish to finish Berlin off. The third generation French was nowhere to be found until the end of the mid-game. I reckon that was the main reason for my inability to get the 2 science per turn in the later mid-game (besides less than ideal micro-management, that is ). It would have been advisable with hindsight to have deferred getting Darwin’s Voyage until later when the science rate was four rather than two turns.

The reputation (or lack thereof) was a handicap as I could not make alliances with the Japanese and the Chinese despite their being Cordial to Enthusiastic most of the time and my constant gifting them with science. Essentially I only got gifts (and some exchanges) from the rich and powerful Spanish with occasional supplements from the skint Greeks. Pleased to have landed AC this time.

Great work again you scenarists (Tom and vik, currently) in finding new twists requiring non-routine problem solving in OCC.

BTW what do others think of the suggestion to have the variables unique to a particular comparison game (especially the later ones with their interesting twists) listed with the usual comparison data. This would give a better overall picture of each OCCer’s results.
For example in OCC12, one variable might be the types of government chosen by the AI civs. And for OCC13 the number of off-shore civs one had to contend with and also if like me you also had to put up with a 3rd generation civ. And also whether as in SG[1]’s (and geofelt’s) case, a different starting site was chosen.

I hope some of you had a little bit of fun with this. The "find another city-site" option didn't occur to me until after I emailed the scenario to Paul.

There's a trade-off, of course. By killing the 4 AIs that were in your starting area, you gain Bronze Working, Alphabet, Ceremonial Burial, and Code of Laws, which was designed to jump-start you into Monarchy.

Plus, you get to found your city on your first turn rather than searching.

Well, on a personal note, I will be going on vacation tomorrow (Wednesday) for about three weeks or so. I don't think I will be playing Civ2 during that time. Take care!

Oldman, ouch. Pretty aggressive of the AIs to attack without warning. They made a few demands of me late in the game (demanding Advanced Flight, Superconductor, that sort of thing - I was only too happy to oblige, since they would have declared war if I hadn't), but no sneak attack thank goodness.

Vik, SG1 was still able to get all the techs from the 4 neigbour civs before he wandered off to found his city. But you're rightthat precious time was wasted (if there had been another ideal city site nearby it might have been a different story). Enjoy your vacation

Have a nice holiday Vik!!! I enjoyed the scenario, even though i ill treated by the opposition?!?!!? this now makes 2 occ's i've fluffed in a row!!!! i lots the observatory on occ11 and gave up, this one!! i daren't even try occ12!?!?

After the "Incident" with the Japs and Spanish last night i reloaded to see just what their problems were!!! they were just mightily pissed that i existed i think!!! i gave them all my gold, gave them both space flight, and grovelled as much as i could!! it put the Japs off attacking me, but the spanish still finished me off regardless?!?!?

I guess it's just not to be... I'm thinking that my style of play was a bit aggressive, Machiavellian you might say, cause i only had one alliance and they were tight gits, i waged war on people for money, and then siding with the winners for more money later on!! maybe i rubbed the spanish up the wrong way!??!

Oldman, what was your reputation like just before the AIs destroyed you? My reputation started at dishonorable after the 1st turn, and then improved to questionable ~1000AD, where it stayed for the rest of the game (unlike you, I was nice to my AIs ). If your reputation was the pits, it might explain why the AIs didn't like you towards the end.

Pfew, this was a hard one. Though I had incredible luck with huts in the beginning (Monarchy in 3600BC) I couldn't get to two-turn advances until 1580AD and only then till 1772AD. I was researching Space Flight and one turn into it the needed beakers jumped from 2170 to 3290! Next to the Japanese and the Spanish there were only Indians and Chinese on the continent and I was at war with the Chinese for a long time so I couldn't dump techs on them. Luckily the AI left me alone till the end.

Since I managed to get a dispicable rep playing a normal game (OCC 14), I left those 4 civs to fight it out in the fertile crescent and moved elsewhere. In hindsight, going to the landlocked, 3 silk 1 wheat site with no rivers probably cost me several turns. With only 1 grassland, my growth was stunted and i never did get the wheat turned into silk. I also had 2 ocean squares i couldn't do anything with. I could have founded 4 turns earlier, and gotten a coastal city with 7 grasslands, 3 river squares, whale and 2 silk. On the other hand, I would have been closer to all 6 of the other capitols too, so maybe it wasn't that bad. I had fantastic luck with the huts, even getting a musketeer late in the game (used a peace treaty to get him home), and obtained pottery from 1 which allowed me to trade for monarchy (don't remember when, but was at the latest 3400BC). On the other hand, I got 3 advanced tribes forcing me to reload, including 2 consecutive... I also keep forgetting to sell my improvements when they have served their purpose, also started the apollo program about 7 turns late, which forced me to use a several freights earlier than I had planned, leaving me scrambling to rush-buy SS parts and even giving away all sorts of SS and modern warfare techs to get gold out of my allies. I also managed to overcompensate for last games research mistakes, costing me 6 turns by discovering nuclear fission/power preflight. (In OCC 14 I couldn't get 3 turns/tech post spaceflight...)

Quite a challenge for the MGE player ! Of course we had no choice but to whipe out those 4 little civs. Later, we found a great 4 Whales spot not too far away ....
As it was, it was hard work to improve all that land , we were almost too late.
We decided to build both Marco Polo and Eiffel to get rid of a horrible science penalty and to restore our reputation. It worked rather well
