potentially stupid question
Heres a potentially stupid question:
Can the human player vs the AI surrender? I mean is it an option when you're getting your butt kicked? (I've never seen it but I was wondering)
I'll have to look, but I've never seen the "you lost" videos when you lose. Are there any?

This could be a potentially stupid answer, but I don't think so.

A little. Basically, when you lose a couple of cities or on the verge of death, the AI may ask for a lot of money or tech for peace. Normally, though, it will just press on and eliminate you.
My memory's bad on this particular subject (never really tried it out recently). Also, I haven't seen the "you lose" video, if there is one...
Maybe someone can shed some light on that subject?

I think that if you get conquered or you retire early, it shows the punishment sphere video, but if anything else happens, it just shows one of thos little text inserts that pop up throughout the game.

punishment video
These are the video files involved when you lose...
(if the faction leader is a man) loseman.something
(if the faction leader is a woman) losewoman.something
Basically, in the video, the punishment sphere chamber opens, camera zooming in on ya, and this little robotic arm moves towards your haed and there's a groaning scream... and there the video ends .
And they all lived happily ever after...

I've never seen that presented as an option, even when having my butt handed to me. It seems to me that surrender is equivalent to losing -- I confess that in such dire situations, I don't give the AI the satisfaction of my elimination and just turn the game off.
I suppose it might be advantageous to surrender and hide in the shadow of your conqueror, waiting to become an uncooperative submissive (or outright betrayor) later. But I can see why the game wouldn't want you to.

when i lost an economic victory in a scenario because i wasn't paying attention to the little pop-ups, chairman yang gave me a countryside estate for my retirement.(no seriously! it actually had a pop-up message. "the hive corners the global energy market. chairman yang gives you a countryside estate for your retirement"

There is an alternative ending when getting squashed like a bug. I've manage to get it to come up once. All other times I've gotten that nice little punishment sphere video.
I have not be successful in installing the 4.0 patch so this applies to v1.0 SMAC. If you can get yourself eliminated instead of eradicated you get teleported via dimentional gate to a new starting location with a couple colony pods, some defensive troops and several combat troops. I was actually better off than before I got zapped. As I said, I've only managed this once.

SMACed, this is a kind of a cheat for which you get killed in MP games :
In the game options choose "Do or Die" off
Chose Morgan
Make your scout obliuterate Morgan Industries
Now you should get a message saying you have started again on a new location!
(with morgan this means +another 100 EC)
There you go!

Economic victory means that you total thought control the Planet with a huge number of EC's. I have never lost to an Economic Victory, so I can believe or not believe that thing about retirement estate
I have seen that Punishment Sphere video just once when I saw that I had hopeless starting conditions and obliterated my base with the scout. Do or Die was o'course off.

I experimented with this once. You also get a free former and synthmetal defender. And +100 credits each time. I can understand why this would get you in major trouble in MP I like do or die ON, since I hate having to chase down dead factions.

the other day I went to all the trouble of starting a game, and no sooner had I moved my scout out, then a worm walked in!

Now that several of you have mentioned it. I think I was playing as Morgan the one time that I got relocated instead of just interagated. I usually play with do or die in the off selection since I don't mind have dead Civs restart. But, I don't remember ever having anyone other than Morgan restart in a new location.
