I won't have time to play Civ2 until Saturday or Sunday, but when I do, I'll post how well I do with that setup. Of course, I won't name my leader Lancer .
I usually get bored around 1600 AD.

Ok, it's working again. Now I can start that civ2 game.
It might be hard for me since I don't play on deity level much . I think that the last time I did I was conquered by the Japanese who somehow crossed the entire Pacific Ocean in triremes. I hope I do better this time!

Smash, sure, just have fun. When you post your score note that it was with no restarted civs.
GD, Diety isn't hard. It can put you off in the beginning because the opening is different. Keep your first unit in your Cap, send the second out. Build temples before granaries and research mystisism early on. Focus on the long term attitude adjusting wonders. In the beginning I build Hanging Gardens alot, but not much anymore. Like anything else, you'll get used to it. Btw, did you know that if you play at diety you always get 2 settlers to start? Also if you fall behind in sci the game adjusts so that you get more beakers? On the other hand, the AI just has to think about something to build it and your ppl are a drag, but you can deal w/ it.
Kick butt!

It's 1750 and I'm still trying to defend myself with legions and knights. I'm not doing to well...

GD! The first few can be rough, but you have to play diety, even if you don't always do so, you should get good at it. The reason? Civ 3 is going to be tougher...
You may find as I did that you prefer it once you get used to it.
My game is crummy too, it's mostly sci types in the AI. I'm allied w/ the Babs and Indians, at war w/ the Celts. I saved & retired just to get my score and in 1806 it's 305.
I like aggressive AIs, like the Mongols and Russians, but oh well.

I finished my game in about 6 hours.Nothing too grand.Stayed relatively small(12 cities) and landed late 1800s

I'm too lazy for big civs these days.Probably could have landed much earlier but I got sidetracked for awhile with unnecessary wonders
