Roads vs. Railroads
Why is it that the "go to" command works fine for sending units around when I have roads connecting cities but once I "upgrade" to railroads, the "go to" command sends the troops around on crazy journeys which ultimately end in the troop hopping into a mountain or swamp tile where there are no roads whatsoever?

I think it depends upon the version. With the regular version of Civ2, RR goto never presented a problem. After I bought MGE, I experienced the same problem as you -- making gameplay a chore. It was so irritating that I have since switched back to playing the older version almost exclusively.

I also got the problem with FW. Dunno what causes it, though, must be some fault in the algorithm.
You can go around this problem by chosing intermediate destinations.

The Go To command - and its crazy antics - has always been a cause of complaint. Various patches for the various versions have claimed to have fixed the problems but it remains unreliable. It seems to be at its most unreliable in the vicinity of a map's line of (as it were) Zero Longitude. Certainly, crossing that line with a Go To command is fraught with danger.
As Mercator suggests, the best way around the problem is to send the unit on a series of shorter, preferably straighter journeys to its destination.

I hate the Computeres inability to work out that i have railroads and to use them as a priority , i find if i just issue the Goto command it doesnt work as welll as actually clicking and dragging with the mouse, but stil lthe damn caravans will leave the main route and decide to hop over some mountains instead...
