Most profitable counterstrike?
When at war with an AI you can see it do real stupidities.
Like stacking up 4 or 5 diplomats to send them to one of your cities: you see them comming 1 attack bye bye 5 diplo's.
This is what i call an effective counterstrike.
But my best counter happened yesterday: the AI had send its fleet to my territorry, but stacked 10 destroyers and a little stack of 4 cruisers. My response 2 cruise missles bye bye half the Mongol fleet.
anyone else who had such beauties of opportunities??

On the back foot a while ago, decided to bribe a nearby AI size 3 coastal city for about 3-400g and got a fleet of over 40 ships in the bay into the bargain (~8 battleships, ~8 submarines, ~10 cruisers, ~15 destroyers). Handily they were within range of a couple of my other cities so that I could support them all too.
Don't know if that counts as a counterattack.

I once had a city on the east shore of the Black Sea (real-world map, obviously). The mighty fundie Germans (in europe) were at war with my southwestern neighbor. The goto sent the entire german navy to my harbor. They sneak attacked me on land. I tossed a nuke in the middle of their logjam - poof! 52 units killed, and no pollution! (I dropped it two squares out)

there goes my example...
Wow that's what can be called counterstrike.
Even for 4000 gold that bribe would have beena bargain.
52 units vaporized auch.
(that's the way i like fighting, but most of my enemies never evolve far enough to be a thread )

once, the AI sneak attacked one of my boats (i lost it). this was right after i had just finished a war with another AI and had lots of free howies and a railroad to my new enemy.
on my turn i virtualy destroyed the dumb civ. (all but 4 cities)

Maybe this counts...
In the latter stages of almost every game I play, the barbarians seem to wage all out war with me. They pop up in the most bizarre places. Usually this means that 21, yes that's right TWENTY-ONE, barbarians magically appear in the middle of my civ (usually in a small area which isn't covered by any city). But they mostly stay stacked the first turn with only 1-3 partisans moving out of the stack.
I send out a stealth fighter to take care of them. Pow, it seems like everyother turn I'm killing a stacked pile of between 16-20 partisans. And it goes on, and on, and on...

Rah don't worry that isn't exaggerated, I've had similar experiences. In later games these enormous amounts of barbs sometimes popup.

Same here rah.
In a game where I was trying to pump up my score by conquering the world except for 1 puny AI city, I'd expanded across the continent except at a couple of places. Naturally, barbarians would keep spawning at those places. I'd formed nice defensive barriers around the areas, but after a couple of 21-unit barbarian spawns, you can get stacks ranging in the dozens easily. Loads of fun for my steath fighters
