I know it's a stupid question, but...
how do I know which citizens are which?
there's talk of empaths, doctors, transcedii, and all sorts of such specialists, on top of the regulars.
I think of them as in civ2. OK, a talent is a happy citizen, a drone is an unhappy citizen, a (I don't know what they're called in the game- a "dude"?) is a content citizen. I think.
But I can't tell what they are in the city screen! which ones are the ones with the headsets, which have the funky helmets? how do I know???
Please help.

Click on the specialized citizen with the left mouse button. Then you should see a list of available specialist types. The highlighted type is the one you selected, and the list also tells what bonuses each citizen gives. It's much easier than trying to describe them to you. Someone could attach images, though... I'll look into it.

Find the folder of the game, seek out a pcx.file called icons or newicons and check the bottom half. i tried to attach it, but the damn thing didn't show up
Right to left:
Talent, talent, worker, worker, drone, drone, drone, drone, technician, doctor, librarian, engineer, empath, thinker, transcend.

I had the same problem at first. Let me see if I can suceed in giving some usable descriptions.
1. The talent is the first none specialist worker to show on screen starting from the left. The manual claims they're green, but it doesn't look like that on my monitor or else it's a real flaky green. The Talent should have the headset and the easiest way to be sure you know what they look like on your monitor is to start a game as Lal since the very first citizen under Lal's normal settings is a Talent.
2. The next type in line, or the first if you have no Talents, is the ordinary worker. These should be a yellow that is plainly yellow and not some odd-ball hue. These are the ones that you convert to Doctors, Librarians, etc.
3. Next comes everyones favorite, the drones. These are just a bald-head red face. People here have said that they come in red and an intense red. Just like in CIV the unhappies came in red and black. I don't think I've ever seen the "SuperDrone" but then I get wiped off the face of planet long before I can get to that point anyway.
4. The Technician is kind of like the Tax Collector in CIV and is kind of a redish-brown or orangish. The face mask is the biggest clue.
5. Doctors are pretty obviously doctors and function like the old entertainer. They are also the default specialist so you can get them at any size base.
6. Librarians are only available with the proper tech. They look a lot like a cleaned up Zak. And Once again all Male since they improve Science. Although everyone knows that "real" librarians are female. So maybe these are supposed to be Library Directors which tend to be Males at the Unversity level.
7. The thinkers and empaths to me look a lot alike. Both have a bright, light blue background and the Icons look a lot like Medusa heads to me. They also require special techs to acquire.

Danke schön Sprayber!
And super drones are those drones with the all red background. They are equilavent of two drones, and appear if the base is supposed to have an extra drone but there is no available population yet. Thanks Ned (I think) for telling this to me.
