A New Corporate System
A way to expand upon trade and introduce a cheap version of corporations would be this. When discovering The Corporation tech you will be able to build Corporations, The World Trade Center, and use Capitalization. Corporations will give a 50% trade increase to every city that has a resource linked to that is being traded. The World Trade Center (Wonder) will provide a Corporation in every city.
Example of how Corporations will work:
Lets say I'm the English and I'm trading with the French. I have the cities of Manchester, Liverpool, London (capital), Reading, and Cambrege. All of those cities are linked to my resource oil by road/railroad except Cambrege. All of my cities have a Corporation except Manchester. The French have a good supply of iron, which is something I need desperatley. The French are also in need of oil. So we decide to trade oil for iron. That would mean that my cities that are linked to that resource (oil) by road/railroad and have a corporation would be receiving a 50% trade bonus. So London, Liverpool, and Reading all would be getting a 50% trade bonus.
Side note - a city can only receive one trade bonus regardless of how many valid, corporate resource trades are going on. I originally had the trade bonus as 25%, which is better 25% or 50% trade bonus?
Please help to refine system. It doesn't matter if it won't be in Civ3, it's still fun to discuss.

There was a real good corporation thread a while back complete with pictures of how corporations would affect production and trade. It ended up with over a 100 posts as the idea was fleshed out, alas in the switch over to vBB I lost the link and could not find it on DarkCloud's Essential Threads. I will keep trying though because it will be impossible to discuss this subject again without that thread.

I think I remember seeing a corporation thread before. I can't really remember much from it, though. I doubt my idea is anything like what has been mentioned before. Considering it is tied into trading resources. As Korn pointed out, once you get a big empire and you have almost all the resources there won't be much incentive in trading resources. This Corporation idea might prevent that from happening, limited trade between resources.

Well your idea seems to be corporations take unused resources and increase your trade. Seems much the same.
The corporation thread I am talking about had multiple corporations including food (McDonalds), manufacturing (Ford), and technology (Microsoft) and had them impact each civ they came into contact with. Each corporation would act as if it was its own civ moving from city to city to make more money. All the while it would give the benefit of the host city of providing more food or more luxuries or more whatever.
The country that started the corporation would gain a trade benefit, like benefiting from the stock market.
