Hidden Specials
I've been reading Gastrifitis' excellent work on settlers & engineers ( http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...7&pagenumber=1), one thing I'm not sure on.
If you suspect a special is on a mountain square, what do you do?

I always thought specials are only hidden for grassland. To reveal it, you must mine or transform the grassland

Nothing to suspect:
either you see it (yellow=gold, red=iron)
or there is no special on that mountain

And is it only grassland with a shield that could be a special?

Hidden specials are possible from ordinary grassland tiles as well.

Really??? Have you confirmed this???
I have never ever seen a non-shield grassland hide a special square. Or rather I should say that the grassland square that is hiding a special resource has always (and I really mean always) been a shield-grassland square. I just thought this was part of the game...

Yes sir ree LF,
(rah, discovering a gold mountain)
Nothing sweeter than seeing gold on the opening screen, with a rivered grassland next to it and a few forests. Monarchy by 3250, here we come.
RAH
Assuming 2x1x of course.

I side with SG on this one. Just last nite I played a short while, and I converted (IIRC) a shieldless grassland tile to a silk. I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I'm certain it was without shield.
Sounds like something that needs to be tested today to verify!

I also converted a nonshield grass square to a pheasant this weekend. It was on a peninsula (so no pattern clues), and I was going for forest. While not displeased, it was a surprise. I am certain it was a non-shield grassland.

Shields follow a different pattern (for a row of tiles from lowerleft to upperright: 2 with shield, 2 without, 2 with, 2 without, ..., and switch with/without shield for neighboring rows) and are independent from special patterns. Hence it is quite possible that a special can be hidden under an un-shielded grass.

... and I confirm it for the third time. I have had to change many shieldless grassland tiles into other terrains for scenario design purposes.

ahem, the shield pattern for grasslands is totally independant from the special resource pattern. that is why there's nothing speaking against a non-shield grassland hiding a special resource... no, I can't prove it , it's just the way it is

Well lo' and behold, the next time I played CivII, I "found" a special resource under a non-shield grassland square. So I can now assuredly say that there is no connection between the two.
I didn't know there actually was a shield pattern for the grassland squares. It looks so random...

that's the one
just start the map editor and create a big area of only grassland... you'll recognize it at once... it does look random though, only found out after Provost Harrison told me abvout it half a year ago
after playing it for 5 years that is
