Yes it is!
And we'll probably play it throughout the forthcoming millennium, since civ3...perhaps... ... ...

My favorite is now purple. Cos they get better scores when you press F11. GNP and Annual Income I think.

Lars-E, if you care to know, that is due to a bug I am fairly sure. If you load the last patch for civ 2, then these things are fixed.

In MP, Always try to take green. Still 2nd for land selection, so you're usually on or near a river, but it still allows me a few seconds to respond to barb moves (unlike white). Early in the game this can make a difference. Losing one of your first three cities to barbs makes a BIG difference in your exponential expansion. After the first 2500 years, it doesn't make much difference.

Another reason not to choose white in MP (even though I usually do) is that white usually gets put on continent 1. This makes clicking on the black squares to find the land edge useless.

Albert, I know that's a bug. I have version 2.62 for which there are no patches, I think.
So purple is still the favorite.
But if I feel rational tomorrow I might want to try cyan:
Cyan - Americans or Chinese.
The reason for this is that cyan nations get more starting techs than others, according to Scouse Gits research. Now, the Americans or Chinese are the only two civilized cyan nations. Civilized nations get alphabet more often as a starting tech than others. Alphabet is needed for monarchy.
Now, SG later said something like "this is not proven" or be careful with the findings. That's ok.
This a quote from the GL: The Cost of Research explained
"On the other hand, if you have more Starting Techs than your Key Civ, you can easily get the Bonus without even giving away all of your techs. Starting Techs are an enormous advantage not just at the start, but throughout the whole game as they determine your ability to reduce your science cost."

I like to play the Sioux because I think Dark Purple is the Easiest to see. I also like to play the Americans but that's just because I am an American.

For those who are looking for an advantage, either the white or the purple civs are likely to be highly advantageous, depending on your playing style. This is because of the "key civ" element of science cost. If you're going to develop a large, dominant civilization, then you'll want to play purple, because then as a Supreme power you will be your own key civ and you won't pay any science cost penalty. If, on the other hand, you're going to play OCC mode, wherein you're likely to spend a lot of time as the Pathetic power, a white civ will put you in the same position.
Personally, back when I was still struggling to win at Emperor level, it seemed to me that the Babylonians and the Zulus were the most troublesome for me, and of course the Japanese are so militaristic they're a pain too, so I started playing greens preemptively. By now I find I just like the color.

I like to play Romans, Celts, Greeks and Cartaginians.
I don't ever play yellow or blue, I like the egyptian and Viking emissaries too much , so I'd rather meet them.

when i was playing SP, i tended to have difficulties with the zulus. to avoid this i started playing as green (customized zulus) to the point that i always picked green. more recently though, i play MP exclusively and end up picking white. this is due to rah always taking green ( ) and my taking white allows rah's customization to take effect (playing rah with no ferrets involved just seems wrong )

My favorite colours are the bright ones (white, orange, yellow and cyan), because they are the easiest to see on the small map.

hehehe....In mp you want to take a civ after whatever has been chosen.White is/can be a very bad choice as there is no response time for barbs. You get hit twice in effect. The barbs appear and attack before white's turn. Then they move after the last player's turn.It can be hairy for white at times. Also can be very beneficial once defenses are adequate.
If someone takes white,I'll take green every time.

Yes, when the customization doesn't take, it doesn't feel right. And it's always appreciated.
There are some advantages to going first in MP though.
First crack at kings.
You get the wonder if you both are scheduled to complete it the same year.
There's been a lot of discussion on civ placement. While a lot of it is still speculation, it's generally agreed that first is better than last.
Now do these outweigh getting a chance to react to barbs? Some games it does. After a few thousand years reacting to barbs isn't as important.

Pah, i take the purple civ and get quite upset if someone beats me to it....usually this isn't the case....
generally go by the Mongol Horde or some variations of this....
every once in awhile you get royally screwed on placement....but for the most part the only crappy thing is that i am last in all the same things that Rich mentioned above....

I take the yellow ones cuz its easier to see city placement when you're zipping through the Micro-map. Also like Aztecs and Egyptions as civs, so it's all the more appropos..

Thanks for the laugh. Since most of our worlds are, (what have been generally cursed as), tiny rocks, everyone starts on continent one so it doesn't matter. Except the time we all start on continent 2 because continent 1 is only about 10 squares in total.

the joys of 37-47 large land mass/continent worlds. Early and often conflict fighting over very limited resources.
