Yeah, the Russians were definitely the worst in Civ I. The reason for this was simple, they started with a city in Moscow that had two grasslands surronded by production rich forests. You could quickly build an army early in the game to take over one or two cities and be on the races to an early win. It was basically cheating to take them as your civ.
I basically did the same thing you did only as the Aztecs. I never actually played as my own nation, I always liked beating Lincoln.
