# of civs in one game
I am wondering if it has been confirmed on how many civs you can have in one game?
Is it still seven, or has it been updated to a higher #. It doesn't say on the website. Could someone clarify this for me!!!
That would be great!

According to Jeff Morris, up to 16 at the same time will be customizable in the editor. Thus, is anyone going to play with the default 8?

Look in the gallery. Second picture of first page is the game setup screen. It includes 7 slots for opponents, so therefore there are 8 total civs in a standard game. (Not including Barbarians)

But if you read this quote from June it states that all 16 civs can be playable on the same map:
Quote:
|
"Civilization III will feature 16 civilizations out of the box and current plans are THAT ALL 16 WILL BE PLAYABLE ON THE SAME MAP, either as human multi-player opponents or quite adept Artificial Intelligence (AI)."
|
Now that was said in June...
So, has it changed back to 7 civs on one map or can you play up to 16 civs on one map!!!

I'm glad we'll be able to have 16 civs, but some of us also like playing with only a few from time to time. It helps add to the great variety of game experience each time you play. If you think people will always want the maximum because of the challenge, remember there are some of us who aren't as good at playing as you might be.

This is a happy/sad day for me . I used to worry about Civ3, the silence about the game was beginning to worry me. No worries anymore. The webpage is awesome and the game is looking very, very good. Any doubt about a Civ2.5 is completely gone in my book. The game looks to be developing into a spectacular improvement over old Civs.
But it is a sad day too...No sign of Elvis

It's quite apparent they have gone for hardcore 3D instead of any form of live video this time.

I would ask the opposite question. As we discussed many times in the past few months, I really doubt folks are going to play with more than 8 civs, once they figured out that it's better to have fewer unique, quality civs than more civs that are just cluttering up the map (in which several will be eliminated before you even see them). You may think it's cool to play with 16, but I am willing to bet that any more than 8 will become unplayable for most. You'll see.

The reason I want 16 is I opt for realism, I hate when each country owns a land area as large as a continent.

This is my belief also. With 16+ (I even recall 32+ civs as a "minimum demand" from some civers, not that long ago) simultaneous civs on the map, most of then are bound to be small, and tucked away behind several other AI-civ land-areas in between. For the lion-part of the game you wouldnt even see them at all. Only indirectly through traded diplomacy/ embassy-contacts, and that would take some time to gather.
And what about the diplomacy negotiation-table (with 16+ civs), or worse; How do you get them all to agree to elect you as chairman of FN = enabeling diplomatic victory? I say smooth-talking a majority of 4-5 AI-civs is more then enough. With more, it just becomes too much work and too little fun.

De gustis non disputandum (or something similar)
I myself like diplomacy, peace, and many civs. Then again, I'm not that good at Civ2 (it's so much easier to nuke em all
Give me a HUGE UN which can't decide anything, and problems everywhere (like real world) and I'm happy

I'm not a real Elvis fan, but Civ just wouldn't be Civ without him.
I too want the movies to be live video.
I personally wouldn't mind if all the Civs were the same, I just want control over ther names. I want to play games made up of the nationalities that I belong to. I want to play continent- specific games, particularly The Americas.
The number of civs is one of the areas where I want realism. Sometimes, at least. I don't have a specific problem with one civ taking up a whole continent, however.
several civs disappearing before you encounter them can provide more randomness, or maybe certain civs thrive better depending on how you customized the map.

You can play with up to 16 civs (including yourself) using the editor and up to 8 civs (including yourself) using the main menu or you could say 15 civs with editeor and 7 civs using the main menu.
I'm really glad to hear all this.

Ralf and Steve your points are valid but that doesn't mean people won't want to play with 16 civs at once. My first game I will probably do 8 civs then I will go change the rules and make my second game with 16 civs. I will determine which one is more fun and go from there. It's as simple as that.

Don't forget, Firaxis has stated that MANY SCREENS WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY FOR MORE THAN 8 CIVS.
