Autorun Suggestion
Okay, I know this isn't a suggestion forum any more, but as they probably haven't made the autorun for the CD yet will I post this anyway.
I would like to see a customizable effect of autorun: When you insert the CD it should check HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ civ3keyname\autorun for what to do.
If that key can't be found it should do the default option (show a menu where you can select to install the game).
In options somewhere one should be able to set how the autorun.exe should work.
I would like to see the following options.
1. Show menu where you can select Start Game and Start Editor (Default)
2. Just start the game without questions.
3. Start a list of applications. (That you want to run together with the game)
4. Nothing
Comments please

Is there any other options that could be good, I could just think of four.
I just remembered that I forgot to say that there has to be some indication about that and where the game is installed in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (or in a ini-file (I really liked them )) so that the Autorun don't asks you to install it just because you are logged in as another user.

It also should have an option which will pop a question whether
you have been member of the Pessimistic civ'ers club. If you'll
answer yes the game automatically exits!

Don't you realize what you can do if you are allowed to select what happens when you insert the Civ3 CD?
If you just want to play the game, why do you want a menu to popup where you select play the game, you should probably just want the game to start when you inserts the CD and selects option 2.
If you always have a lot of other apps open when you play Civ option 3 is perfect for you. Just create a list of all apps you want to start together with the game (Don't forget to add the game itself ), and when you insert the CD it starts all your APPs without forcing you to start them one by one.
If you are tired of games that pop up a menu every time you insert the CD you should select option 4 and don't want to disable Autorun in Windows as it is useful in helping you install new apps .
If you like A menu with a cool picture from the game and some buttons as Start Game, Reinstall, Official Webpage, Manual, Start Editor or what they add to that dialog you should use the default option (1).
I myself would use either 2 or 3, depending on how the game is.
In total it would spare you some mouseclicks every time you start the game . And hopefully make you feel that the autorun is perfect for you

Notepad - To keep track of my enemies
Calc - for management
And in multiplayer: Sol.exe of Winmine.exe, for all waitingtime.
And about the CD I know people that only have 2 GB HD,, they would most likely make a minimum/run from CD installation

Gramphos, i could make you a program to do that easily. it wouldn;t work with autoload, but if u opened it i could make it load any set of programs you want and then civ itself.
oh wait. Optimist Club.
never mind.

I can do that too, but I tried to think out a good solution so that I didn't have to do it myself, i'm to for that.

if u are willing, you could make that exe, and rename it autorun.exe (or whatever the autorun is on the civ3 disc) and burn a CD with YOUR autorun and the rest of the civ3 cd.
then your autorun would be autorunning

I want to use the original CD.
It might be possible to hack into the Windows' autorundetection and, just for Civ3, modify what to do.

Eh, no.
Most players will have the Civ 3 CD permanently embedded in their CD-ROM drives so the "autorun" feature will not work. You have to make this part of the game (or a loader that loads the game).
Another bad idea is to mess with the registry. What's wrong with a text file in your Civ 3 directory.

Sometimes I right click on the CD and selects Autorun, and you can make a link to the Autorun.exe instead of the civ.exe.
And a textfile is NOT userspecific, so if my brother wants other settings then me he has to change it every time.
Okay I admit it, there is ways to walk around that to. Just create an app that checks what user is logged in and place his files in the gamedirectory. (I use this for Games with Savegameslots to be able to have your own slots).

theres nothing wrong with messing with the registry, i've even made some modules to make it easier for me.
it's better at hiding stuff that you want to boot up with windows

here's the proggy
heres the registry entries it made by itself...
if u click "MARK" (the yellow one), the program will never load like that anymore, it will just open, run the list of proggies, and then close itself.
too much time on my hands? yes.

But if you want to edit the list?
No, you should use the commandline to tell the app what to do.
civ3autoloader /edit would open your screen
civ3autoloader /load would run your apps
and what happens if you set it to load itself?
