"Mongol government escaped to Ormuz"
Hello addicted Civers!
This is my first post on this forum, but I've been visiting Apolyton for quite some time.
First, I'd like to share a very annoying and strange moment of Civ-playing with you. My forever enemies, the Mongols, were almost finished with their spaceship while mine wasn't even started, (only cowards build spacehips to win). Anyway, I decided to nuke their capital, (Karakorum), and then I marched in with my ground troops. Pheew! I thought, their spaceship is destroyed. WRONG! An ugly dialog box appeared: "Mongol government escaped to Ormuz". Plus their spacehip wasn't destroyed!
Has this ever happened to you??? How can I prevent it from happening again? Has it got anything to do with the Mongols having a fundamentalist government or me using Nuclear Missiles?
2nd question:
In the original Civilization you could "split" a rival civilization's empire by marching in to their capital. Is this possible in Civ II? Can you "split" empires in any other way?
Thank you for helping me out in this hard situation!

If your capitol is taken and you have at least 1000 gold, you can relocate your capitol to another city. This applies to both human and computer players. The only thing you can do about it is to continue taking their new capitols until they no longer have the 1000 gold needed to relocate.
And yes, you can also split rival civilizations. There have often been discussions about this, but apparently nobody has yet found out exactly what circumstances are necessary to trigger this.

The largest civ can have civil war
You have to take the capital of the largest civ in the game to trigger civil war.

A window will pop up when this is possible. I have been able to do this twice before.

Actually, this has been thoroughly disproven. Civs of all sizes have been split!

I've only seen an empire split once and I didn't do it. It was a WW2 scenario on a world map. I was playing the Germans and took over the British Isles. Their government escaped to Singapore and the Japanese took that city over (after eliminating China, leaving an open spot for a new civ).

The reason why a AI civ doesn't split when you take over the capital is because you are stronger(higher in the power graph)
and it really isn't that hard to become the strongest in a sp game.
(I WANT STRONGER AND SMARTER AI'S !!! )
For the reasons how and why to split there are the civ split thread and the "prevent them to escape" thread.
I even posted a game on the later one where you can see how even a 6 city empire can be split(when there are 2 50city empires)
Alexander's Horse=> go take a look there, and see with your own eyes.

I have to point out an exception to this though - when this first happened to me, I couldn't work out why, so I tried taking the city with conventional troops instead of nukeing it, and lo and behold it worked - the Aztec spaceship was destroyed. Has this happened to anyone else?

This thing happened to me today:
I attacked the Japanese capital with ground troops, succesfully. After marching in with my good old mech infs a dialog box popped up saying "Japanese escaped to 'Ise'". I've heard that before I thought... but then another box popped up saying like: "Japanese great project 'Manhattan Project' moved to another city". ****.
So, next turn I invaded Ise, destroying both their spaceship and Manhattan Project, and this time I was surprised to see that their government didn't escape, since they had way more than 1000 Gold!
This, along with the_orange1's example shows that the explanations posted in this thread so far aren't correct... any other ideas?

Unless the AI thought it'd be better to spend the 1000 coins on something other than new palace, I can't imagine why they wouldn't move their capitol. If you're rolling over their cities, more defenders (or perhaps some counter attackers) might be a better investment of their 1000 coins. I don't know whether the AI actually thought this or if your situation implies that there are other factors at work. Your example does prove that just because the AI has 1000 coins, doesn't mean that it'll choose to (or perhaps be allowed to) move their capitol.

I've had the same thing happen several times, EmperorMing.
Capture the capitol, they have >1000 gold, and they don't relocate.
I'm not sure, but I think it's usually happened to me with smaller civs.

I often see the moving-capitol thing when stopping a spacerace. With a wealthy-enough foe, I've seen it move 5 or more times. But eventually you will be able to breathe that sigh of relief in seeing the message: "Mongol Spaceship destroyed". So plan your invasion accordingly, or have plenty of nukes lying in store.
In order for a Civ to split, there must have been one eliminated earlier in the game. That way, the old eliminated color is the one to reappear.
