Can units be upgraded?
I don't know if there's a definitive answer to this question.
Can units be upgraded, just like having a Leoardo's Workshop? But coz the player has to do it manually.

I sure hope so, cuz it is annoying to have to dispand the old soldiers and then build some new ones...ok, the dispanding is no necesary It would be great to be able to choose "upgrade" when a warrior is in town and you have alreade invented musketers, of cause it shouldn't be free to upgrade, and the upgrade should also take turns to upgrade (depending on how big the upgrade is)
I sure hope it's in the game

I think somewhere along the line Firaxis stated that there won't be a workshop.
I for one didn't like the SMAC workshop but that might be primarily due to having too many upgrades and all that sci fi crap. A more simple workshop would be very nice indeed, though, for Civ3. Having to upgrade your warrior to having a sharper stick then upgrading the warrior to have an advanced war stick, etc... is just a little too lame for me.
Actually nevermind forget what I said, I'm glad Firaxis didn't include the workshop.

Me too! I'm glad the workshop isn't in! I think that was the main obstacle to reasonably decent unit graphics.

He was refering to the wonder in Civ2 that upgrades obsolete units into new ones, ie phalanx to musketeers for example. You deffinately won't have the ability to customize and create your own units, like in SMAC.

What he said. In Civ 2 units get upgraded automatically if you have Leonardo's Workshop. I was wondering if the same capability will be available to other players in Civ 3, though the upgrading will take time and resources.
Speaking of the unit workship, I for one miss it.

Well, I really hope that you can upgrade units, particularly muketeers to riflemen or at least pretty similar units. Even without a workshop, at least upgrades like the one mentioned are very straight-forward.
Although I hope upgrades will only be allowed in cities as I found it really laughable in SMAC when I'd be marching my unity rovers from exploring/worm farmin into their first battles and they'd magically turn in chaos dragons right outside an enemy base.
