Something Different for a Change
I've tried actually drawing something and I think it came out pretty good. I think that the shadows falling on the buildings are probably the only problem.

Lighting is nine-tenths of the battle in drawing.
They look good. A touch more texture on the roofs and some cylinder lighting on the smokestacks would go a long way I think.

I'm going to make a few similar ones; there are very few 19th century city styles.
Lighting is nine-tenths of the battle in drawing.
They look good.
Thanks.
A touch more texture on the roofs
I did make them for a civ clone where the palette was slightly different and that might have lowered the number of distinct colours. My technique is:
1. Draw the building.
2. Add Noise from PSP 6's Image menu.
3. Draw the windows.
4. Increase the size to 1000%, Smooth, and decrease it back to 100% (10% of 1000%).
6. Draw a shadow.
7. Add noise to the shadow and convert it to greyscale.
8. Compose a city from individual buildings.
and some cylinder lighting on the smokestacks would go a long way I think.
Would that be a light vertical, a darker vertical, and a dark vertical?

I've been making some city graphics myself lately - well not really city, more like village - would anyone like to see them?

Looks good, St. Leo! I agree, the smokestack could use a bit of roundness. Even so, they'll be effective in the game. Your shadows look fine.
William, the trees look a bit odd. Maybe just make the central stem longer than those on the sides... Otherwise, the buildings and fire look good.

They look very good William, they would probably look better though with a different background color pink.

There's a telephone pole in the right set. I haven't really experimented with wall yet.

I'm making a nation pack for www.c-evo.org, and you, Captain Nemo, and Erwan have been slacking off when it comes to 19th century city graphics.

Walls?
Pure quality!
As these are designed for scenarios set in the radical era of the 19th century, walls were outdated by Gunpowder by the 15th century so there is no point is designing walls.
Perhaps drawing various sizes of Barracks next to the city to depict the presence of Militia as this was an era of war on a grand scale, I need only mention Napoleon...
