Graphics requirements - no go for notebooks
I have a bad piece of news regarding graphics requirements. That civ 3 requires a greater resolution than 800 times 600 will preclude most notebook users (including me) from playing the game . I have an otherwise decent notebook but this graphics requirement killed all my hopes.

I feel your pain. I've logged many hours of Civ 2 on my 800x600 notebook, and hate the thought of having a Civ 3 CD that I can't play when I'm traveling.

You might want to check out Dell. They have great deals right now on their latest notebooks.

I got my notebook from dell too and it runs at 1600x1200
Dell makes great notebooks, and not too expensive either, though compaq is the least expensive of all.
If I try doing that with my desktop, everything becomes microscopic though. I have that set at 1152x864.

Dave: Boss, the guys at Apolyton say I should get a new notebook.

Boss: Will it be compatible with your docking station? Will it have two serial ports? Will it run your work-related apps?

Dave: Who cares? As long as it runs Civ 3...

Thanks for the warm welcome back from the community.

It rather an unpleasant that after three months without the internet, I come back to uni, log on to the through my notebook and one of the first things I find out is that I will not actually be able to play the game (new notebook, even of the cheaper variety is way too expensive). Worst of all my computer is sufficient to runn civ III in all other respects (I have AMD K6-2, 475MHz CPU, 64MB RAM, etc. but only 800 times 600 resolution - one of the few specs that cannot be upgraded. grrrr)

Hey ancient, that is an ingenious idea!! Many thanks - you restored some hope in me.

BTW: How much do you think could a monitor capable of displaying the required resolution cost?

Just about to say the smae myself
I use an old 1024*768 monitor hooked to the laptop which also has 1024*768 but I hate staring at an LCD monitor for hours on end.

Not sure but an old cheap one like mine would be max £50 ($60)
Good new monitor is around £250 - £300.

Don't, I repeat DON'T, buy a Dell notebook. They are complete garbage. I used to work at Dell, so I can't tell you why you should not (I signed a form . . .), but I cn tell you don't do it! I don't know which notebook you should buy, but I know that notebook isn't a Dell.

I better be able to play Civ3 while travelling
And I better be able to play without lugging my 17" monitor around (how would I power that thing on a plane anyway?). What, is Firaxis promoting work and productivity over gaming now?

Mister Pleasant,

I bought a dell laptop back in december 2000 and it runs fine with 1024 x 768. The new ones can even do better because they have the new GeForce2Go card installed in them.

Just tell your boss that Civ3 is just a complex business simulation.

Point is Dell in Italy is probably the best "notebook for the money" if you would a decent graphic card (GeForce2go).

I would like to have Civ III running on my future personal notebook just because of my daily commute by train.

My company doesn't allow to install personal sw on business notebook (1024*768), but my current personal notebook is (800*600) so I'm out on the cold

Why Firaxis isn't able to squeeze Civ III on a Palm M505 colour is beyond me...
