units.bmp file question ?
I know I should know this, and I think I used to know...
Why is it that saving a units file as .bmp instead of .gif is making my units invisible? I switched computers and am trying to use Adobe PhotoDeluxe (which I use for everything else) and now I can't get .bmp files to work. What is the trick?

Make suer you save as the right kind of .BMP file. If it is a 256-color or a 16-color BMP, it won't work.

You know you should know this? Oh my! I don't
Actually my problem is that I'm not sure if I understood your question Well, just in case.... the default is units.gif, not units.bmp. If you have both kinds of files in the same folder, Civ2 will ignore the .bmp file. Useless info, I'm afraid
PS. It's good to see you back, Frisco Kid, ... and out the OTF

Err...it must be in 256 color (8bit) in every case (BMP or GIF), unless we speak about ToT.

Civ 2 does not use the universal 256-color palette... so it needs to be a palette .BMP, with Civ's palette, not what happens if you save as a 256-color .BMP with a normal palette. Try modifying a units file slightly with Civ's scen editor, then using that file as a starting point.

Ooops, then I misunderstood, I thought you mean that it can´t generally have 256 colors...

That worked for what I was doing... didn't try to open my Adobe units.bmp, but just adjusted a units.gif in the civ editor. Thanks all. I'll try the adjusting the Adobe units.bmp file for kicks tomorrow and let you know how that goes too, but it should work.
Jay Bee - I am somewhat surprised but I did remember to move my units.gif file! You have gotten that Spanish Caravan song stuck in my head - "Waiting for the Sun" was my very first album.

by the by... Using the Civ editor to open and save an Adobe units.bmp with invisible units doesn't help. They are still invisible.
