Why Is Loading So Slow Again?
What is going on? Things were peachy for weeks there, and now, the past three days or so, loading time has slowed to a snail's pace. It takes 5 minutes to load a thread! Traffic on the site is dwindling fast! There is almost nobody here. Can something be done? Is something broken?

The problem is almost never ping times, Mark.
Even if it was a bandwidth issue, response time and sustained transfer rates are different beasts entirely.
I've pinged Apolyton during slow times and get ~130ms response. A-okay.
But it still takes like 200s to load the page.

Downloading avatars isn't the major problem (For me, at least).
Most of the waiting I'm staring at a white screen while it's still sending the beginning of the table information to me, the avatars load afterwards fine. It seems to me the problem is on the server's end trying to construct the page to send, and is under too much strain to do it immediately.
But I really have no idea, I can't see the server stats while it's slow.
All I know is users shouldn't have to switch off tons of the features to get decent speeds.

3 more days till I get the ADSL.
And even with this 33k modem, I dont know what you're complaining about. I didnt notice any problems in the last days.

Try going on at different times.
It's great for speed at one point, horrible an hour later.
Last night at 3AM my time pages were loading in under one second, right now it took 38 seconds to load this page, and it'll jump up to 60-80 before the end of the day.

It seems to be a load problem. However, since the traceroutes and pings were relatively fast I suspect the disks to be the bottleneck.

It's painfully slow...and doing tracerts will not help since the problem is not in the network. (The slowdowns occur to multiple posters from different regions and other sites load fine with these posters.)

You seem to forget that these past few weeks North American schools have been going into session. I find I have fairly speedy loads mornings and early afternoons. But, 3pm local time hits and the drag begins. So it could be all those school-aged Apolytoners have rushed home to get their daily fix, especially now that civ3 news is hot and heavy. I can imagine many of them come home to find a dozen or more posting notices in their inbox from threads they have subscribed to.

At this point you may be wondering what more can you do to assist during this server slowdown. I have the answer for you that will indeed go far in both the short and long term that is even more productive than simply voicing your complaints here.
Please email GameStats' Director of Technology, Tony Bolger, at tonyb@worldchat.com and let him know your concerns/frustrations over the unreliability/slow connection times etc. you have been experiencing in recent weeks on Apolyton and other GameStats affilate (hosted) websites; that is, rather, if you visit any other -- they are all affected.
We thank you for your concern and continued patience and support as we all try to resolve this outstanding matter.

the avatars shouldn't matter. They load last. I'd like to look at the text and basic table outline of the posts. so I can read the posts. The avatars and other graphics can load while I'm reading.
I have a cable modem btw with a good fast connection most of the time.

Comment Mark is trying to limit the amount of spammers on apolyton by making load times slow
