Civ should be real-time
I think the turn-based system of Civilization slows down the game. A real-time approach would force players to make smart fast decisions. Multi-player possibilities on the Internet would be more exciting too. Now you have to wait and wait. Time limiting destroys the fun too, at a certain moment I was able only doing half the things I wanted to do when I were in a multiplay game. I think it should be or should become an option in Civ III or Civ IV.
Agree?

You should be perma-:banned: for this
The only excuse you have is that you are a settler who do not know much about Civ and Apolyton...

Definately NO!
I play different games for different reasons. If i want to play a 'faster' game relying on fast smart decisions, then ill play a RT game like Quake or Starcraft. If i feel like a 'slower' game, then ill play something like Civ. To suddenly diverge the Civ style game into essentially two different games would spoil the Civ feeling of the game and make the development of the game much more complex.

Civ is a thinking game.
Real-time? Go play Starcraft.

Why would you want to change a classic turn-based game into a rts? Civilization practically invented turn-based strategy games and there has been no equal to the Civ series except for SMAC which was also made by Sid Meier. Civilization is known for being turn-based not rts.

Well if it was real-time, it just wouldn't be civ. Not that I am against producing a god game that spanned the whole of human history that was real time, it would be quite a good idea of executed correctly. But it wouldn't be civ, and civ has it's own niche...

Empire Earth is going to try and take a RT to the whole of human history. But it appears to be a similar game to other RTS where you start out in an era of your picking and then you have to pay to upgrade to the next epoch.
Meanwhile, MOO3 is going to bridge TBS and RTS. We will see how it works but Civ is Civ and should stay TBS.

So Starcraft is the sterotype RT game everyone brings up in here? lol
I prefer Age of Empires II myself. I do agree with the status quo, however, on Civ being best as a TB game.

If they did what the Warlords series did and have an
RTS and a TBS game... I'd be glad with it... Ithink I'll bump an old thread on this

Sigh...Civ is a TBS game, and to change it at this point would mean a drastic cut-back on the release date and NOBODY wants that.

Suggesting civ should be RTS is like suggesting chess should be RTS.
However, I can see the benefit of restricting peoples' turn times, a la chess clocks. Implementing in PBEM along the lines you have 24hrs from the moment of receipt of the file would be useful to keep games fluid.
Online games are just too time-consuming full-stop.

Civ an RTS game? I'll take a pass on that. Civ is about letting a long term strategy unfurl slowly. It's a game of history and strategy, not tactics. Besides, I always hated racing all over the AoE map repelling enemy attacks while launching my own attack. If I want to test my reflexes I'll hit my Playstation.
Yeah, RTS civ would be like RTS chess

Why can't all you RTS lovers just accept that not all games need to be real time to be fun???!!! You don't see turn-based fans going to the Warcraft, AOE, Starcraft forums and complain that it should be turn based! If you like RTS games great go play it but don't ***** about a style of game that I like. Leave Civ as it is!!
Power to the TBS!!!!

civ is about spending 10 minutes on one city sometimes, how are you going to do many citys real time.
AoE only had one small base.

RTS is fun and all, but lacks the depth possibilities of TBS, and especially civ.
I know people who nearly worship Starcraft, but they admit that they have played it out after a year or two. after five years, we are still plumbing the depths of what is possible in civ. That is something which just isn't possible in an RTS.
head over to the civ2 strategy forum great library. try some of those monsters of strategy and ask yourself if those would be possible in an RTS. the size 5 strategy? ICS even? Perfectionism? OCC? OCC size 1? being able to tweak your beakers so you discover monarchy on an oedo year?
I admit that many of these will not be the same in civ3, but we will find other strategies, equally unplayable in RTS form, for civ3.
for more thought check out my column "TBS - The thinking persons genre"

I love Civ so mush just because it is turnbased. Simultanius turns are acceptable, but not Real wtime.
